Trade – India Strengthens Gulf Ties After Ceasefire, Focus on Stability
Trade – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a virtual discussion with Saudi Arabia’s Commerce Minister, Dr Majid bin Abdullah Al Qassabi, expressing confidence that the recently declared ceasefire could open the door to sustained peace and stability across the region. The conversation reflected a shared sense of cautious optimism, with both leaders acknowledging the importance of restoring normalcy after a period of heightened tensions.

Focus on Supply Chain Stability
During the interaction, Goyal commended the resilience shown by Saudi Arabia in maintaining supply chain operations despite ongoing disruptions. He highlighted the determination of the Saudi people and institutions in ensuring continuity in trade flows even under challenging conditions. Both ministers recognised that recent conflicts had placed significant strain on regional logistics and supply networks.
They agreed on the need for coordinated efforts to accelerate recovery, emphasising that stable and efficient supply chains are critical for economic growth. Ensuring the smooth movement of goods, particularly in volatile times, was identified as a shared priority.
Condemnation of Attacks and Support for Indian Community
Goyal also raised concerns over the recent attacks in the region, condemning acts of violence that have disrupted normal life and trade. He appreciated Saudi Arabia’s efforts to safeguard the Indian community during the crisis, noting that such measures have helped maintain confidence among expatriates.
The protection of citizens abroad remains a key aspect of India’s diplomatic engagements, and the minister acknowledged the proactive role played by Saudi authorities in this regard.
Strengthening Bilateral Trade Relations
The discussions also covered steps being taken by India to support exports to Saudi Arabia and the broader Gulf region. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade ties and enhancing economic cooperation.
There was renewed optimism about progress in negotiations for the proposed India-Gulf Cooperation Council Free Trade Agreement. The agreement is expected to further boost trade volumes and open new avenues for collaboration across sectors.
Wider Engagement with Gulf Partners
In addition to his dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Goyal held a series of virtual meetings with other key Gulf partners. These interactions underscored the importance of maintaining stable trade flows and strengthening economic partnerships in the aftermath of the ceasefire.
During his conversation with Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi, the minister expressed hope that the ceasefire would hold and contribute to long-term regional stability. Both sides agreed that sustained peace is essential for economic recovery and growth.
Engagement with UAE and Bahrain
Goyal also spoke with the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi. He welcomed the ceasefire and highlighted the importance of uninterrupted trade in maintaining strong bilateral relations. The minister reiterated India’s support for the UAE and thanked its leadership for assisting the Indian diaspora during the recent tensions.
In a separate discussion with Bahrain’s Minister Abdulla Bin Adel Fakhro, both sides stressed the need to restore stability in maritime trade routes. They noted that predictable shipping operations are vital for ensuring consistent trade flows and supporting regional economies.

The series of meetings reflected a broader commitment among India and its Gulf partners to deepen economic ties and enhance cooperation across multiple sectors.
