Infrastructure – Goyal Reviews Zurich Airport’s Investment in Noida Project
Infrastructure – Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met senior leadership from Zurich Airport International to assess ongoing and planned investments linked to the upcoming Noida International Airport project.

High-Level Meeting Focuses on Airport Development
Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal held detailed discussions with Daniel Bircher, Managing Director of Zurich Airport International Ltd, regarding the progress and long-term roadmap of the Noida International Airport. The meeting centered on investment commitments and the broader vision for developing the greenfield airport in western Uttar Pradesh.
Following the interaction, Goyal described the engagement as constructive, highlighting that the collaboration demonstrates India’s determination to build globally competitive infrastructure. He noted that such partnerships align with the country’s long-term development vision under the Viksit Bharat 2047 roadmap.
Strategic Partnership Under Public-Private Model
The Noida International Airport is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership model involving the Uttar Pradesh government and Zurich Airport International AG. The project, often referred to as Jewar Airport, represents one of the most significant aviation infrastructure initiatives currently underway in India.
Officials believe the airport will act as a catalyst for economic activity in the region. Besides enhancing air connectivity, the development is expected to stimulate growth in real estate, logistics, hospitality, and ancillary industries. Estimates suggest the project could generate nearly 100,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities over time.
Designed as a Net-Zero Emission Facility
One of the distinguishing features of the Noida International Airport is its sustainability framework. The airport is being designed as a net-zero emission facility, combining energy-efficient operations with environmentally conscious infrastructure planning. Developers aim to create a modern aviation hub that balances operational efficiency with climate responsibility.
The facility is expected to integrate Swiss technical expertise with Indian service standards, offering passengers a technologically advanced yet culturally welcoming experience.
Capacity Expansion Planned in Phases
In its initial phase, the airport will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually, supported by a single runway and a dedicated terminal building. Over four planned phases of expansion, the airport’s total capacity could rise to approximately 70 million passengers per year.
Authorities say this phased development approach will allow infrastructure growth to align with passenger demand and air traffic patterns in the coming decades. With an initial annual handling capacity of 1.2 crore passengers, the airport is positioned to emerge as a major aviation and economic hub in the National Capital Region.
Boost to Delhi-NCR Connectivity
Situated around 75 kilometers from the national capital, the Noida International Airport will become the second international airport serving Delhi-NCR after Indira Gandhi International Airport. The additional capacity is expected to ease congestion at Delhi’s primary airport while improving access for residents and businesses in western Uttar Pradesh.
The project is also being designed as a significant cargo hub. Enhanced freight handling capabilities are likely to strengthen supply chains, improve export efficiency, and support industrial growth in the region.
Multi-Modal Transport Integration
Connectivity planning has been a key component of the airport’s design. The site will be accessible through six major road networks, along with rapid rail and metro linkages. Plans also include the introduction of pod taxi systems to facilitate smooth intra-airport transportation.
To ensure operational reliability during adverse weather conditions, the airport will be equipped with a CAT-III B Instrument Landing System, enabling aircraft operations even during low visibility.
Long-Term Impact on Regional Development
Once operational, the Noida International Airport is expected to significantly reduce operational pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport while broadening regional aviation coverage. Policymakers see it as a transformative infrastructure project that will not only enhance passenger travel but also accelerate economic development across the Delhi-NCR region.
As investment discussions continue between Indian authorities and Zurich Airport International, the project stands as a key milestone in India’s effort to modernize its aviation infrastructure and strengthen global connectivity.
