RajyaSabhaElection – Tight Numbers Make Bihar’s Fifth Seat Contest Uncertain
RajyaSabhaElection – The upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Bihar has drawn renewed political attention as parties prepare for a competitive contest for the fifth seat. With six candidates competing for five available positions, both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition alliance known as the INDIA bloc are intensifying their efforts ahead of voting scheduled for March 16.

A Rare Competitive Rajya Sabha Election in Bihar
For the first time in over a decade, the Rajya Sabha election in Bihar is expected to witness a direct contest. In previous elections during the past 12 years, candidates had secured seats without facing opposition. However, the current scenario has changed due to the number of candidates exceeding the available seats.
Political observers say that while four seats appear relatively secure based on the present composition of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the fifth seat has emerged as the focal point of political calculations. The outcome may depend on the support of smaller parties, independent legislators, or possible cross-voting within party ranks.
NDA Fields Four Candidates
The NDA has entered four candidates in the election. Among them are Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Union minister Ram Nath Thakur, and BJP state general secretary Shivesh Ram. Given the numerical strength of the alliance in the state assembly, two candidates each from the Janata Dal (United) and the Bharatiya Janata Party are expected to secure victory without significant difficulty.
However, once these four seats are accounted for, the contest for the final position becomes more complex. The numbers suggest that neither alliance holds a clear and decisive advantage for the fifth seat.
Opposition Backs Amarendra Dhari Singh
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), representing the INDIA bloc in this contest, has once again nominated industrialist Amarendra Dhari Singh. His candidacy has added further significance to the fifth seat, as the opposition is relying on strategic support from other legislators to strengthen its chances.
According to current estimates, the NDA may retain a surplus of around 38 votes after securing its likely four seats. The INDIA bloc is believed to have approximately 35 votes available. This narrow gap has made the role of smaller parties and independent members particularly important.
Smaller Parties Could Influence Outcome
Votes from legislators belonging to smaller parties are expected to play a decisive role in determining the final outcome. In particular, the support of five legislators from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and one legislator from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is being closely watched.
If these votes shift toward one alliance, they could alter the balance in the contest for the final seat. Political analysts also note that the possibility of cross-voting cannot be completely ruled out in such closely contested elections.
NDA Leadership Expresses Confidence
Despite the uncertain arithmetic, leaders of the NDA have expressed confidence about their prospects. JD(U) working president and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Kumar Jha stated that the alliance expects to win all five seats.
He also confirmed that a meeting of the NDA legislative party is scheduled to take place at the residence of senior minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary in Patna. The meeting is expected to focus on strategy and coordination among alliance legislators ahead of the voting day.
Voting and Result Schedule
The Rajya Sabha election in Bihar will take place on March 16. Voting will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m., after which the counting of votes will be conducted the same day. The final results are expected to be declared shortly after the counting process concludes.
The election is being held as the terms of five current Rajya Sabha members from Bihar are set to end on April 9. These include Harivansh Narayan Singh, Ram Nath Thakur, Amarendra Dhari Singh, Prem Gupta, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader Upendra Kushwaha.
With numbers tightly balanced and multiple political factors at play, the outcome of the fifth seat remains one of the most closely followed developments in Bihar’s parliamentary politics.
