Politics – JD(U) Workers Protest Against Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Move

Politics – The decision involving Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s possible transition to the Rajya Sabha has sparked visible discontent among several workers of the Janata Dal (United), triggering protests and raising questions about the party’s internal direction.

Nitish kumar rajya sabha protes

The issue gained attention after discussions surfaced regarding Nitish Kumar being nominated to the Upper House of Parliament, which could lead to a leadership change in Bihar. The proposal has unsettled sections of the party’s grassroots supporters, many of whom believe the move could weaken the political connection built around Kumar’s leadership in the state.

Protests Erupt Outside Party Office in Patna

Tensions became evident on Friday when groups of JD(U) workers gathered outside the party’s state office in Patna. Demonstrators raised slogans and voiced their dissatisfaction over the possibility of Kumar leaving the Chief Minister’s position.

Some protesters also wrote slogans on nearby walls, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), JD(U)’s alliance partner, of going back on political understandings. Workers alleged that the party had fought several elections highlighting Nitish Kumar as the face of governance in Bihar, and therefore replacing him now would be unfair to loyal supporters.

Party Cadre Voices Concern Over Leadership Change

Many workers participating in the protest argued that the party’s electoral success has long been associated with Kumar’s leadership. They expressed concern that moving him to the Rajya Sabha might disrupt the political structure that JD(U) supporters have backed for years.

Several demonstrators also gathered close to the Chief Minister’s official residence, urging Kumar to reconsider the decision and continue serving in his current role. Protesters said the leadership change could affect the party’s grassroots morale and alter its political positioning in the state.

Police Deployment Amid Rising Tensions

As the protests intensified, authorities increased security arrangements in the area. A significant number of police personnel were deployed near the party office and surrounding roads to prevent any escalation and ensure public order.

Officials monitored the situation closely as demonstrators continued raising slogans. The presence of law enforcement helped maintain control while party workers expressed their concerns publicly.

Nitish Kumar Announces Rajya Sabha Plan

The political discussion intensified after Nitish Kumar made a public announcement on Thursday confirming his intention to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. The announcement came through a message shared on social media.

In his statement, Kumar explained that he had served in several legislative roles throughout his political career, including as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the Legislative Council, and the Lok Sabha. He added that serving in the Rajya Sabha had been a long-standing aspiration.

Later the same day, Kumar formally filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha election. The nomination process took place in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which further drew attention from political observers and party workers alike.

Earlier Protest and Damage to Party Property

The unrest among JD(U) workers was not limited to Friday’s demonstration. On Thursday as well, some workers had gathered at the party office to express dissatisfaction over the proposed move.

During that protest, a section of demonstrators reportedly damaged furniture inside the party office premises. The incident highlighted the depth of frustration among some party supporters regarding the leadership transition being discussed.

Political Developments Continue to Unfold in Bihar

The unfolding situation has led to increased political speculation in Bihar, with analysts closely watching how the leadership question within JD(U) will evolve in the coming days. Party leadership is expected to address the concerns raised by workers while managing internal unity.

Meanwhile, the state also witnessed another administrative development. On Thursday, Lt. General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain was appointed as the new Governor of Bihar, replacing Arif Mohammad Khan. The change in Raj Bhavan coincided with the ongoing political developments in the state.

As the debate around Nitish Kumar’s potential Rajya Sabha role continues, the reaction from party workers suggests that the issue may remain a significant topic in Bihar’s political landscape in the near future.
