BiharPolitics – Minister Turns Professor, Power Tariff Shift Raises Concerns

BiharPolitics –  Bihar witnessed an unusual yet noteworthy moment on Wednesday as a senior cabinet minister stepped into a classroom, taking on the role of an academic. At the same time, fresh political signals from the state’s leadership and a new electricity pricing system have sparked wider discussions across administrative and public spheres.

Minister Takes Classroom Role at Patna College

Bihar Rural Works Minister Ashok Choudhary surprised many by appearing in a completely different capacity. Recently selected as an Assistant Professor by the Bihar State University Service Commission, he conducted a political science lecture at AN College in Patna.

What made the occasion particularly significant was his past connection with the institution. During his tenure as a minister, Choudhary had personally overseen the construction of the college building. Now, standing in the same premises as a teacher added a symbolic dimension to the event.

Before entering the classroom, he spoke to reporters, noting that it is rare for someone holding a ministerial position to directly engage with students as a professor. His interaction with students was seen as a blend of administrative experience and academic involvement.

Nitish Kumar’s Delhi Move Draws Attention

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent political steps have triggered speculation in political circles. Though he has long been active at the national level, his unopposed election as president of JD(U) and his move to the Rajya Sabha are being closely watched.

Having governed Bihar for over two decades, his decision is being viewed as carrying deeper political meaning. According to discussions within party circles, Nitish Kumar himself raised questions among colleagues about his transition to Delhi, leaving even close aides intrigued.

Known for his straightforward communication style, he has often made unexpected political moves at critical moments. Observers believe he may be positioning himself strategically for future developments. RJD MP Misa Bharti also extended her congratulations on his unanimous election as party president.

New Electricity Tariff to Impact Consumers

In another major development, electricity consumers in Bihar are set to face changes in billing patterns from April. The state government has approved the implementation of a ‘time of day’ tariff system, which will result in higher charges during peak evening hours.

The move follows approval from the Bihar Energy Regulatory Commission, based on proposals submitted by both North and South Bihar Power Distribution Companies. The objective is to better align electricity pricing with fluctuating procurement costs and improve efficiency in the power sector.

However, the decision is expected to increase financial pressure on consumers, especially households already managing rising expenses. While the government has introduced a scheme providing 125 units of free electricity for domestic users, the new tariff structure may offset some of that relief.

Balancing Governance and Public Impact

These developments collectively highlight Bihar’s evolving administrative and political landscape. From a minister engaging directly in education to shifts in leadership strategy and changes in utility pricing, the state is witnessing a mix of symbolic gestures and policy-driven decisions.

While some moves reflect innovation and adaptability, others raise concerns about their long-term impact on citizens. As these changes unfold, their real effects will become clearer in the coming months
