Accident – A tragic stampede at a temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district has once again brought attention to the challenges of managing large crowds at religious sites. The incident, which claimed eight lives and left several others injured, has led to sharp criticism from political leaders and raised serious concerns about administrative preparedness.
Questions Raised Over Administrative Response
Purnea Member of Parliament Pappu Yadav strongly criticised the state government, questioning its role and response following the incident. Speaking to reporters, he expressed concern over what he described as a lack of accountability and preparedness on the part of authorities. According to him, such incidents point to deeper systemic issues rather than isolated failures.
He argued that both the administration and local organisers share responsibility for ensuring safety during large gatherings. Referring to earlier stampedes in the state, including one in Jehanabad, Yadav highlighted a pattern of recurring mishaps at public events. He noted that such incidents are not new and have been happening over time, suggesting a need for long-term solutions rather than temporary responses.
The MP further alleged that certain practices surrounding religious gatherings often place undue pressure on devotees. He criticised what he described as exploitation carried out under the guise of faith, calling it inappropriate and in need of stricter oversight.
Official Confirmation of Casualties and Injuries
District officials confirmed that eight people lost their lives in the stampede at the Sheetla Mata Temple. In addition, eight individuals who sustained injuries were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Authorities stated that emergency services responded promptly, with ambulances deployed to transport the injured.
An official from the district administration said that most of the deceased have been identified, while postmortem examinations are currently underway. The condition of those injured has been reported as stable, offering some relief amid the tragedy.
Compensation Announced for Victims’ Families
The administration has announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives. Each bereaved family will receive a total of Rs 6 lakh, which includes Rs 4 lakh from the Disaster Relief Fund and Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s relief fund.
Officials said that the compensation aims to provide immediate support to affected families during a difficult time. However, the announcement has also reignited discussions about whether financial aid alone is sufficient in addressing the root causes of such incidents.
