Elections – Koridang By-Election Voting Begins Under Tight Security in Nagaland
Elections – Voting for the Koridang Assembly by-election in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district commenced early Thursday morning, with authorities enforcing extensive security measures to ensure a smooth electoral process. Officials reported a steady flow of voters across polling stations, reflecting strong public participation despite recent tensions in the region.

Strong Voter Participation Across Polling Booths
From the start of polling at 7 a.m., long queues were visible at several of the 30 polling stations set up in the constituency. Women voters were notably present in significant numbers, contributing to an encouraging turnout. Voting is scheduled to continue uninterrupted until 4 p.m., giving all registered voters ample time to cast their ballots.
The constituency has 22,390 eligible voters, including over 11,000 women. These voters will determine the outcome among six candidates contesting the by-election. Officials confirmed that vote counting will take place on May 4.
Heightened Security Following Pre-Poll Violence
The election is being conducted under strict vigilance following violent incidents reported earlier in the week. Authorities imposed a night curfew in four villages within the constituency after clashes led to one fatality and injuries to several individuals.
To prevent further disturbances, the district administration has also sealed the inter-state border with Assam. The restriction, effective from April 7 to April 9 evening, aims to curb unlawful movement and avoid any attempts to influence voters through inducements or intimidation.
By-Election Triggered by Veteran Leader’s Demise
The by-election became necessary after the passing of sitting MLA Imkong L. Imchen in November 2024. The veteran politician, who was 75, died following a brief illness in Guwahati. His long political career included multiple terms in the Nagaland Assembly, making him a prominent figure in the region.
Candidates and Political Contest
The ruling alliance, People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), has fielded Daochier I. Imchen, son of the late MLA, as its candidate. He is contesting with the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The race also features strong contenders from other parties. The National People’s Party (NPP) has nominated I. Abenjang, while the Congress has fielded T. Chalukumba Ao. In addition, three Independent candidates—Imchatoba Imchen, Imtiwapang Kichu, and Major Toshikaba (Retd)—have entered the contest, adding to the competitive nature of the election.
Past Electoral Background of Key Candidates
Congress candidate Chalukumba Ao has previously contested this seat three times but has yet to secure a victory. Meanwhile, Major Toshikaba (Retd), who earlier contested under the Naga People’s Front (NPF), narrowly missed winning the 2023 election.
The late Imkong L. Imchen had a distinguished electoral journey, winning the seat multiple times under different affiliations, including as an Independent and later with major political parties.
Campaign Period Marked by Tension
Election campaigning concluded earlier this week amid a tense environment. Incidents of violence reported on April 5 and 6 raised concerns about law and order. Police confirmed that one person died, several others sustained injuries, and multiple vehicles were damaged during the clashes. Authorities also detained 16 individuals in connection with the unrest.
Security forces recovered arms and ammunition from various locations, prompting stricter enforcement measures, including curfew imposition in sensitive areas.
Authorities Assure Fair and Peaceful Polling
Election officials have emphasized that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure that the voting process remains free, fair, and peaceful. Enhanced security deployment, monitoring mechanisms, and administrative precautions have been implemented to maintain order throughout the polling period.
Officials expressed confidence that voters would be able to exercise their democratic rights without fear, despite the recent disturbances.
