Politics – Assam Chief Minister Raises Questions Over Gogoi’s Overseas Assets
Politics – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday publicly called on state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi to clarify details regarding alleged assets and financial links outside India, including in Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

Allegations Over Undisclosed Foreign Assets
Speaking during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s manifesto release event, Sarma urged the Jorhat Member of Parliament to submit a full account of any overseas properties to the Election Commission. He claimed that certain financial details, particularly those related to Gogoi’s spouse, had not been disclosed in official filings.
According to the chief minister, there are concerns regarding undisclosed income sources and bank accounts linked to Pakistan. He questioned why such information had not been included in the affidavit typically required for electoral transparency.
Demand for Verification of Financial Records
Sarma stated that his remarks were made in an official capacity and emphasized the seriousness of the issue. He alleged that properties may exist abroad in the name of Gogoi’s wife, including locations in London and Pakistan.
To address the matter, he proposed an independent review of financial records. Sarma suggested that Gogoi present relevant banking details, even if outdated, to a panel of neutral individuals. He named four journalists who, in his view, could examine the documents and present their findings publicly.
The chief minister maintained that such a step would help determine the accuracy of the claims and provide clarity to voters.
Reference to Additional Claims and Reports
Sarma also referred to remarks made by Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, who reportedly alleged the existence of property in the United States. While distancing himself from that specific claim, Sarma reiterated his own demand for disclosure of any international financial dealings.
He further mentioned a discussion on a Pakistani television channel that allegedly referenced Gogoi’s visit to the country in connection with a non-governmental organization. Sarma said this raised questions, particularly as Gogoi had previously described the visit as personal.
Broader Political Context
The issue has added another layer to the ongoing political exchanges in Assam. Sarma indicated that there are additional matters he has chosen not to raise during the election period, suggesting that more information could be presented after the polls.
He also revisited earlier allegations involving supposed links between Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Clare Gogoi, and Pakistan’s intelligence agency. A Special Investigation Team had previously been formed to examine these claims, though no conclusive findings have been publicly detailed.
Comments on Party Switching
Addressing a separate political development, Sarma spoke about recent defections of senior Congress leaders to the BJP. He defended the move, stating that individuals are free to join any political party and that such transitions are part of the democratic process.
He argued that no individual is permanently tied to a particular party and suggested that the responsibility for retaining members lies with the party leadership. According to Sarma, the trend of leaders joining the BJP reflects broader political dynamics rather than any external influence.
Ongoing Political Debate
The developments have intensified political debate in the state, with both sides expected to respond further in the coming days. As elections approach, issues related to transparency, accountability, and political affiliations continue to dominate public discourse.
The Election Commission’s role in reviewing disclosures and ensuring compliance with electoral norms may become increasingly significant as the matter unfolds.
