WestAsia – Congress Alleges Israel Expanding Control Amid Regional Conflict
WestAsia – The Congress party on Saturday accused Israel of using the ongoing conflict in West Asia as an opportunity to push forward its long-term territorial ambitions, warning that such actions could eliminate any remaining prospects for an independent Palestinian state. The party also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remaining silent on developments in the West Bank.

Concerns Over Escalation During Regional Conflict
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh pointed out that nearly four weeks have passed since the escalation involving aerial strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, followed by retaliatory actions from Tehran. He said that while global attention has largely been focused on strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and concerns around energy security in Gulf nations, significant developments have continued elsewhere in the region.
According to him, Israel has maintained military pressure in Gaza while simultaneously expanding its operational footprint beyond the enclave. He highlighted that activities in southern Lebanon have also intensified, with reports suggesting the creation of a wider buffer zone.
Developments in the West Bank Raise Alarm
Ramesh expressed particular concern over recent administrative and territorial measures in the West Bank. He stated that steps taken by Israeli authorities appear to move beyond temporary control and toward a more permanent occupation framework.
He noted that shortly before Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Israel, the Israeli cabinet approved land registration measures covering a substantial portion of the occupied West Bank. This decision, he argued, could have far-reaching consequences, potentially affecting land ownership and leading to the displacement of large numbers of Palestinians.
Criticism of India’s Diplomatic Position
The Congress party questioned the Indian government’s response to these developments. Ramesh suggested that New Delhi has not adequately addressed what he described as serious humanitarian and political concerns emerging from the region.
He alleged that despite India’s historical support for the Palestinian cause, the current approach appears inconsistent. The party believes that India should take a clearer stance on issues related to civilian safety and territorial rights.
Ongoing Humanitarian Concerns in Gaza
The situation in Gaza continues to draw international attention, with reports indicating ongoing civilian casualties and widespread destruction. Congress leaders reiterated their concern over the humanitarian impact of continued military operations, calling for greater global focus on protecting non-combatants.
They also pointed out that actions in the West Bank, including displacement and settlement-related developments, have attracted criticism from various parts of the international community.
Broader Implications for Regional Stability
The Congress party warned that the continuation of such policies could further destabilize an already volatile region. It stressed that long-term peace would require renewed diplomatic efforts and adherence to international norms.
The remarks come at a time when geopolitical tensions in West Asia remain high, with multiple fronts of conflict contributing to uncertainty. Observers note that developments in the West Bank, Gaza, and neighboring regions could have lasting implications for peace efforts and regional security.
