Elections – Assam political battle intensifies as leaders trade sharp remarks
Elections – The political atmosphere in Assam has grown increasingly charged as the state approaches its next election, with both the ruling party and the opposition alliance making strong claims about public support and future governance.

Ruling Party Asserts Strong Public Backing
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, stating that the people of Assam firmly support the current administration. According to him, the opposition lacks a clear vision or concrete agenda to present before voters.
He pointed out that decades of governance by previous regimes have already been evaluated by the public, suggesting that voters are now more inclined toward continuity rather than change. Sarma emphasized that his government has worked to reshape the state, highlighting improvements rooted in Assam’s cultural identity and heritage.
He further claimed that support for the opposition is limited and suggested that the majority of indigenous residents stand with the ruling party. His remarks also included sharp criticism of the Congress, questioning its ability to regain political strength at the national level.
Opposition Alliance Highlights Desire for Change
In contrast, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi presented a different picture, asserting that there is a growing wave of enthusiasm among voters who are looking for a shift in leadership. Leading the opposition alliance, Gogoi said that the current political moment offers a significant opportunity for people to bring about change.
He accused the present government of fostering a climate of fear and argued that the alliance is committed to offering an alternative that prioritizes public welfare and democratic values. According to him, many voters are beginning to envision a different future for Assam, one that reflects new aspirations and governance priorities.
Election Schedule and Key Details
The Election Commission of India has announced that voting for all 126 विधानसभा constituencies in Assam will take place on April 9. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the final outcome will determine the next government in the state.
This election is expected to be closely watched, as both sides are actively campaigning and attempting to mobilize support across regions.
Looking Back at the 2021 Results
The previous विधानसभा elections in 2021 saw the National Democratic Alliance secure a decisive victory. The alliance, which included the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad, and United People’s Party Liberal, won a total of 75 seats. The BJP alone accounted for 60 of those seats, establishing a strong presence in the assembly.
On the other hand, the opposition alliance, comprising Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland People’s Front, and left parties, struggled to make a significant impact. The coalition managed to secure only 16 seats, reflecting a substantial gap in voter support at the time.
Voter Participation and Expectations
The 2021 elections recorded a notably high voter turnout of 86.2 percent, with more than 2.2 crore registered voters participating in the democratic process. Such strong engagement indicates the importance of elections in the state and sets expectations for another active turnout this year.
As the polling date approaches, both the ruling party and the opposition alliance are intensifying their outreach efforts. With contrasting narratives—one focusing on continuity and development, and the other on change and new opportunities—the upcoming election is shaping up to be a significant political contest in Assam.
