Campus – JNU Reports Bail Violations by Students Amid Ongoing Protests
Campus – Jawaharlal Nehru University has approached local police authorities with fresh concerns, alleging that a group of students released on bail have repeatedly breached court-imposed restrictions. In a formal communication dated March 9, the university informed the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj that 14 students were not adhering to the conditions set during their release.

University Flags Alleged Breach of Bail Conditions
According to the university administration, one of the primary bail terms clearly prohibited the students from organising, participating in, or leading any form of protest or gathering, whether within campus premises or outside. Despite this, officials claim that the students have continued to remain active on campus, disregarding an existing restriction that bars their presence in certain areas.
The administration stated that such actions not only violate the legal conditions of their bail but also undermine institutional regulations meant to maintain order on campus.
Night Protest Sparks Fresh Concerns
The university’s letter further detailed an incident that reportedly took place between the night of March 8 and the early hours of March 9. During this period, the students allegedly organised a demonstration and set up a temporary encampment in the lawns near the School of Language and the School of International Studies.
Security personnel had earlier removed items such as tents, bedding, and other materials from the location, but the setup was reportedly restored soon afterward. Officials described this as a deliberate act of defiance and cited it as evidence of continued non-compliance.
Administration Seeks Police Intervention
In its communication, the university characterised the developments as a clear disregard for both judicial orders and campus regulations. It urged the police to intervene and take necessary measures to ensure that the students comply with the bail conditions moving forward.
The administration maintained that maintaining discipline and adherence to lawful directives is essential for the smooth functioning of the university.
Background of Ongoing Campus Tensions
The present situation is part of a larger period of unrest that has affected the campus since early February. The tensions initially arose following disciplinary measures taken against members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union. Four office bearers, along with a former president, faced suspension over allegations linked to vandalism during a protest held last year.
These actions led to a series of demonstrations by students, escalating the situation further. By late February, at least 14 students were detained in connection with the protests and were subsequently sent to Tihar Jail. They were granted bail and released by March 1.
Student Union Rejects Allegations
In response to the university’s claims, representatives of the student union have denied any wrongdoing. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union described the allegations as unfounded and criticised the administration for its interpretation of events.
The union also raised concerns over the inclusion of a peaceful march organised on International Working Women’s Day as an example of bail violation. According to student leaders, such actions represent an attempt to restrict legitimate forms of student expression and dissent.
Situation Remains Under Watch
As the dispute continues, the situation at the university remains under close observation. Authorities and student representatives appear to be at odds over the interpretation of both legal conditions and campus rules, with the matter now drawing attention from law enforcement agencies.
Further developments are expected as police review the university’s complaint and assess the allegations presented.
