Muzaffarpur – Village residents publicly shame man accused of molesting mute woman
Muzaffarpur – A disturbing incident from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district has drawn attention after a young man accused of molesting a mute woman was publicly humiliated by villagers. The episode, which reportedly took place on Saturday in Masudpur village under the Aurai police station jurisdiction, surfaced widely after a video of the incident began circulating on social media the following day.

Allegations Trigger Immediate Reaction From Villagers
According to local accounts, the accused man was allegedly caught in the act of molesting a married woman who is unable to speak. Both the woman and the accused are residents of the same village, residents said. After the allegation surfaced, villagers reportedly confronted the man and subjected him to public humiliation instead of immediately handing him over to authorities.
Residents allegedly shaved half of the man’s head and moustache and smeared soot across his face. Following this, he was forced to walk through parts of the village while a crowd gathered around him. The act was intended as a form of punishment and public shaming.
Video Of Public Humiliation Circulates Online
A video showing the incident began spreading across social media platforms on Sunday, drawing widespread reactions. The footage reportedly shows the accused being escorted by villagers while people surrounding him record the moment.
The circulation of the video has brought the case into public discussion and prompted authorities to take notice. Police officials confirmed that they became aware of the matter after the clip began trending online.
Identity Of The Accused
The man accused in the incident has been identified as Vikas Kumar. Local residents stated that he originally belongs to Sitamarhi district but has been living with his family in the Aurai area for several years.
People in the village said Kumar comes from a modest background. His father reportedly earns a livelihood by selling roasted grain in local markets, which supports the family financially.
Villagers Impose Fine On Accused
Along with publicly parading the accused through the village, residents also reportedly imposed a monetary penalty on him. According to sources from the area, villagers demanded a fine of 5,001 rupees as part of the punishment.
Such forms of informal community punishment occasionally occur in rural areas, though they are not legally sanctioned and can themselves attract legal scrutiny.
Police Take Cognisance Of Viral Footage
Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that they are examining the incident after the video surfaced online. Deputy Superintendent of Police Alay Vats said that police had taken cognisance of the viral clip and were looking into the circumstances surrounding the case.
Officials are expected to verify the claims made in the video, including the alleged molestation as well as the actions taken by villagers. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any formal complaint has been filed by the victim or her family.
Investigation Expected To Determine Next Steps
Police sources indicated that further action will depend on the findings of the preliminary inquiry. Investigators may record statements from residents, the accused, and the victim’s family to establish the sequence of events.
Cases involving both alleged assault and vigilante-style punishment can result in multiple legal proceedings, depending on the evidence gathered during the investigation.
For now, authorities say they are focusing on verifying the facts and ensuring that any action taken follows legal procedures.
