Neela Desai: the first female MLA for Shiv Sena UBT, dies from a heart attack
Neela Desai: On Friday, January 16, at approximately 10 p.m., Neela Desai, the first female MLA for the Shiv Sena UBT, passed away after a heart attack. Desai was a prominent member of the Shiv Sena’s old guard. She became the party’s first female MLA because Balasaheb Thackeray trusted her during a period when women’s involvement in politics was restricted. She has also been a Legislative Council member.

Desai unexpectedly had a heart attack just after the results of the municipal election were declared, and she passed away before receiving medical attention. Her passing has dealt the Shiv Sena UBT two blows. At noon today, her last rites will be carried out. The event is anticipated to be attended by senior Shiv Sena leaders and office bearers.
In the meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls have dealt a serious blow to the Shiv Sena UBT. The BJP emerged as the biggest party, and the party, which had controlled Mumbai’s municipal council for over 25 years, lost this year with just 65 seats.
