Indian Railways: increases CCTV monitoring and provides free wi-fi at more than 6,000 stations throughout the country

Indian Railways: By offering free Wi-Fi at 6,117 stations nationwide, Indian Railways has accomplished a significant digital milestone and improved passenger connection without specific Ministry financing. In a Lok Sabha reply, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided these updates along with the status of CCTV systems to improve security at stations and trains.

Over 6,000 stations now provide free wi-fi. No more funding is required.
Every day, millions of travelers may now use free Wi-Fi at train stations from crowded metropolises to isolated outposts. With 6,117 stations around the country, this service places India at the forefront of rail-based public internet access. The Ministry of Railways emphasized that these Wi-Fi installations did not get any additional funding. Implementation instead made effective use of infrastructure expenditures by relying on partnerships and already-existing resources.

Users just need to input their cellphone number to get a one-time password (OTP), making access straightforward and privacy-focused. Since no further personal information is gathered, frequent worries around digital monitoring are allayed.

Fast remedies for issues with the service, a focus on the passenger
Railway officials keep a careful eye on the network and respond quickly to complaints. To guarantee dependable connection throughout waits, travels, and layovers, the administration quickly fixes any interruptions, whether they are caused by patchy coverage or login problems. Station platforms have become digital centers for streaming, working, and keeping connected as a result of the broad adoption of this user-friendly approach.

CCTV expansion: 11,953 coaches and 1,731 stops are protected
Indian Railways is actively increasing surveillance in addition to the Wi-Fi deployment. 11,953 coaches and 1,731 stations are now covered by CCTV systems, making the travel environment safer. These facilities are covered by capital expenditure budgets, which are financed by planned infrastructure expenditures as opposed to operating expenses.

New Delhi Station: Everywhere is covered by 250 CCTVs
An example of the improvement is the New Delhi Railway Station. In addition to interior spaces like ticket booths and waiting rooms, it already had comprehensive coverage of outdoor regions including platforms, foot overbridges, and entry/exit points. After events on February 15, 2025, more cameras were added, increasing the total number of CCTVs to 250. By reducing blind areas, this all-inclusive grid discourages crime and facilitates prompt event response.
