The event, which was caught on camera and swiftly went viral online, took place in Guaíba, a city in Rio Grande do Sul close to Porto Alegre. The imposing building, which stands around 24 meters tall, was positioned beside a fast-food restaurant in the parking lot of a Havan retail establishment.

On Monday, December 15, motorists could still be seen driving on a nearby busy road as the monument progressively leaned before collapsing to the ground due to high winds. The Havan store chain claims that no one was hurt since the area around the statue was almost deserted at the time. The statue’s ownership was verified by the corporation.

Because of the severe weather, local civil defense officials had already issued a red warning earlier that day. It was recommended that people remain indoors, unplug electrical appliances, and make sure windows and doors were securely fastened. Videos posted on social media from the scene showed strong gusts blowing across the area, with several drivers frantically shifting their cars as the monument started to sway.

Many people responded to the video that the handle ‘@BGatesIsaPyscho’ posted on X (formerly Twitter) a few hours ago. “Heard it collapsed after seeing ticket prices for Scotland v Brazil at the World Cup,” said one person. “There is an intriguing contrast with the McDonald’s in the backdrop. Another user said, “Damn Brazilians can’t even build a decent statue.”

“As the Golden Arches hold strong and steadfast as a virtuous symbol of Western ideals and values,” remarked another user. “The wind is doing its job getting rid of satanic statues,” a fourth user said. “Well, that’s not a good sign,” another person said.
