India entered the third and final match with a desperate attempt to salvage some honor and prevent a clean sweep, as they were already down 0–2 in the three-match ODI series. Australia chose to bat first after winning the toss. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, the visitors’ openers, got off to a strong start by combining for 61 runs, which put India’s bowlers to the test right away.
