Shubman Gill’s T20I Stats: Golden Duck in Mullanpur Continues the Indian Vice-Captain’s Dismal Run

Shubman Gill’s T20I Stats: Shubman Gill, the vice captain of India in Twenty20 Internationals, is one of the few players in the nation who is regarded as an all-format cricket player. Gill’s versatility in all forms is noteworthy, but the Indian team management is concerned about his recent performance in T20Is. Notably, Gill was selected automatically in the format since Ajit Agarkar, India’s top selection, named him as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy.

It’s interesting to note that the 26-year-old started in lieu of wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson, which sparked discussion on social media among analysts and supporters. Sanju performed rather well in the format as the opening batsman, amassing 522 runs in 17 games, including three hundreds.

Gill, on the other hand, has a top score of 47 and has only twice reached the 20s, thus he has no fifties. Gill has only scored 263 runs at an average of 23.90 and a strike rate of 142.93 in his past 14 Twenty20 International innings.

The management of the Indian squad is in a difficult situation due to Gill’s consistent bad performance in the format. Since India lost for the first game at home by a margin of more than 50 runs, the criticism has been even more scathing.

SA Level Series 1-1

In the second Twenty20 International in Mullanpur, South Africa defeated India by 51 runs, tying the five-match series at one. Following a top-order collapse that saw Gill removed for a golden duck and skipper Suryakumar Yadav score only five runs, India was unable to reach 162 in 19.1 overs while chasing a challenging 214.

India’s only bright light was Tilak Varma, who anchored partnerships with Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya while batting 62 off 34 balls. However, the lower middle order was unable to maintain the necessary run rate.

Ottneil Baartman took 4/24, while Marco Jansen and Lutho Sipamla also took important wickets. South Africa’s bowlers were clinical.

Quinton de Kock’s 90 off 46 balls and late finishing from Donovan Ferreira (30*) and David Miller (20*) helped South Africa reach 213/4 earlier. The pacers had trouble on a flat track, but India’s spinners, Chakaravarthy (2/29) and Axar Patel (1/27), provided some control.
