WaterSupply – Planned Pipeline Works Disrupt Supply Across Delhi Areas

WaterSupply – Several parts of the national capital experienced interruptions in water supply on Wednesday as authorities carried out critical pipeline interconnection work. The disruption, officials said, is part of a scheduled upgrade aimed at strengthening the city’s water distribution network.

Delhi water supply disruption

The supply shutdown began at 11 am on February 25 and is set to continue until 11 am on February 27, according to a public advisory issued by the Delhi Jal Board. During this 48-hour window, multiple neighbourhoods will face reduced or completely halted water flow.

Interconnection Work at Dwarka Plant Underway

The civic body explained that the temporary suspension is necessary to link newly installed raw water pipelines at the Dwarka Water Treatment Plant located in Bhagya Vihar. Engineers are integrating a 1,500-mm diameter twin raw water main with the existing primary pipeline system at the facility.

This major infrastructure addition is expected to reorganize and improve water flow management across key zones of southwest Delhi. Officials described the project as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the city’s supply framework and ensure better long-term reliability.

In its statement, the board acknowledged the inconvenience caused to residents and assured that the work is being executed on priority to restore normal services within the announced timeline.

Areas Facing Temporary Water Cuts

A number of residential and commercial zones have been impacted by the shutdown. The affected locations include Dwarka sub-city, Najafgarh town and adjoining colonies, and surrounding areas in southwest Delhi.

Water supply has also been affected at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the India International Convention and Expo Centre, widely known as Yashobhoomi. These high-footfall areas are among those dependent on the Dwarka treatment plant for regular water distribution.

In addition, neighbourhoods such as Vijay Enclave, Uttam Nagar group of colonies, Arjun Park, and Laxmi Vihar are experiencing supply interruptions. Other impacted localities include Mahavir Enclave, Pochanpur, Bharthal, Amberahi Village, Madhu Vihar, Sagar Pur, Kailash Puri, Durga Park, Mangla Puri, and Raj Nagar Phases 1 and 2.

Residents in these areas have been advised to prepare for limited availability until services resume.

Advisory Issued for Residents

The water utility has urged households to store sufficient water in advance to manage daily needs during the shutdown period. Authorities noted that tanker services have been arranged to reduce hardship in severely affected pockets.

Contact numbers for requesting water tankers have been circulated as part of the advisory. Officials stated that tanker deployment will be monitored to ensure equitable distribution, particularly in densely populated residential clusters.

Civic authorities emphasized that such planned interruptions are necessary when integrating large-scale infrastructure upgrades into an existing supply system. While short-term inconvenience is unavoidable, the long-term objective is to enhance water pressure stability and streamline raw water flow into treatment facilities.

The ongoing work at the Dwarka Water Treatment Plant forms part of broader improvements in Delhi’s water management strategy, aimed at addressing rising demand in expanding urban sectors. Once the new main pipeline is fully operational, officials expect improved distribution efficiency in the affected regions.

Normal water supply is scheduled to resume by late morning on February 27, subject to completion of the interconnection process without technical delays.
