Party leaders said the agreement reflects India’s growing influence in global trade negotiations and highlighted the reduction in tariffs as a positive outcome for domestic industries and exporters. According to the BJP, the deal is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two nations while opening new avenues for growth.

BJP leadership highlights economic potential

Reacting to the development on social media platform X, BJP Karnataka president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra said the agreement represents a turning point for India’s economy. He noted that the reduction in tariffs to 18 percent would help Indian farmers, micro and small enterprises, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals gain better access to international markets.

Vijayendra added that the deal aligns with the broader objectives of boosting domestic manufacturing and reducing dependence on imports. He described the agreement as an important step toward supporting exports, generating employment, and encouraging sustainable economic expansion. The BJP leader also credited the central government for securing terms that, in his view, would strengthen India’s position in global trade.

Praise for diplomatic leadership

Vijayendra further congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attributing the agreement to what he described as decisive leadership and effective diplomacy. He said the trade pact reinforces the strategic partnership between India and the United States, which are often described as two of the world’s largest democracies.

Similar sentiments were echoed by BJP Member of Parliament and former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. In his own statement on X, Bommai said the understanding reached between the two countries marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

Bommai stresses national interest

Bommai stated that the agreement demonstrates India’s ability to protect its national interests while engaging with major global powers. He praised the Prime Minister and his team for what he called a carefully negotiated outcome that balances economic opportunity with strategic considerations.

According to Bommai, the trade deal is likely to create new global-level opportunities for Indian farmers, small-scale industries, startups, and skilled workers, particularly in areas linked to technology and development. He said the agreement could help Indian enterprises integrate more deeply into international supply chains.

Opposition voices skepticism

While the ruling party welcomed the announcement, the deal also drew criticism from the opposition. Karnataka Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT and Biotechnology, Priyank Kharge, questioned the significance of the tariff reduction and accused the Centre of overstating its achievements.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kharge compared the government’s response to what he described as previous celebrations following tax adjustments. He argued that the reduction in tariffs from 26 percent to 18 percent was being presented as a major success without sufficient explanation of its real impact on the Indian economy.

Concerns over clarity and outcomes

Kharge also raised concerns about the broader terms of the agreement, alleging that the United States was dictating certain conditions, including fuel purchases. He said there was a lack of clarity regarding what India had concretely gained from the deal and criticized the Prime Minister for not providing a detailed public explanation.

The minister added that ongoing references to unrelated issues had, in his view, added to public confusion rather than addressing key economic questions surrounding the agreement. He maintained that a transparent assessment of the deal’s benefits and challenges was necessary.

Political debate continues

The contrasting reactions underline how major international agreements often become focal points of domestic political debate. While the BJP has framed the India–US trade deal as a forward-looking economic breakthrough, opposition leaders are calling for greater transparency and a clearer account of its implications.

As discussions continue, the agreement is expected to remain under close scrutiny from policymakers, industry stakeholders, and political parties alike, with its real impact likely to become clearer over time.
