Heavy Snowfall Brings Traffic to a Halt

Around 11:30 am on Sunday, intense snowfall was reported in the Sherethang belt, affecting the stretch between Sipsu and 16th Mile. The affected zone falls under the jurisdiction of the Sherethang Check Post and Police Station. Officials confirmed that nearly 350 tourist vehicles were caught along the high-altitude route as snow rapidly accumulated on the road surface.

As visibility dropped and driving conditions worsened, the Army suspended vehicular movement on the vulnerable stretch as a precautionary measure. Authorities estimate that close to 150 vehicles were trapped between Sipsu and Tsangu, also known as Changu, with many families and visitors onboard.

Coordinated Rescue Efforts Underway

In response to the situation, a joint operation was launched involving the police, Army personnel, the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), and local residents. Teams worked in challenging weather conditions to ensure the safe evacuation of tourists and drivers from the snowbound area.

Officials said that around 46 tourists, including several children, were safely relocated to the Army Transit Camp at 17th Mile. The facility is being used as a temporary shelter to provide warmth and basic necessities until the weather improves and the road is cleared for movement.

Emergency teams are continuing to monitor the area and assist those still waiting inside their vehicles. Snow clearance operations are being carried out simultaneously to restore connectivity as soon as conditions permit.

Safety Measures and Road Regulation

Authorities emphasized that the suspension of traffic was a preventive decision aimed at avoiding accidents and further congestion. The steep and narrow stretches of the Jawaharlal Nehru Road are particularly vulnerable during sudden snow spells, making it risky for vehicles to proceed without proper clearance.

Once the snowfall subsides and road conditions are assessed as safe, stranded vehicles will be escorted or rerouted in a phased manner. Officials have urged tourists to cooperate with rescue teams and follow instructions issued by security personnel on the ground.

Tsangu Lake’s Seasonal Weather Challenges

Tsangu Lake is one of Sikkim’s most visited tourist destinations, drawing thousands of visitors each year for its scenic beauty and alpine landscape. However, the region is known for unpredictable weather, especially during the winter and early spring months.

Sudden snowfall and temperature drops are common along this high-altitude corridor, often leading to temporary road closures and travel disruptions. Local authorities routinely advise travelers to check weather updates and road conditions before planning trips to the area.

Despite Sunday’s disruption, officials confirmed that all stranded tourists are being attended to and no injuries have been reported so far. Rescue operations remain ongoing, and further updates are expected once the affected stretch is cleared and traffic movement resumes.

Tourists planning to visit Tsangu and nearby high-altitude routes have been advised to stay in touch with local administration offices and verify road status before departure. Authorities continue to prioritize safety while working to restore normal travel along the strategic mountain road.
