Security – Indian Embassy Issues Advisory After Mexico Violence Surge
Security – The Embassy of India in Mexico has urged Indian citizens to exercise extreme caution and limit outdoor movement following a sharp rise in violence after a major anti-cartel military operation.

The advisory was issued on Monday after Mexican armed forces confirmed the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” during a security operation carried out on Sunday. Oseguera was the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal groups operating in the country.
Embassy Calls for Immediate Precautions
In an official message shared through its social media channels, the Indian mission advised nationals residing in affected regions to remain indoors until further notice. The embassy noted that security forces are conducting active operations in several states, resulting in road closures, heightened law enforcement presence, and reported criminal activity in certain areas.
Indian citizens in Jalisco State, including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara, were specifically mentioned in the advisory. Residents in Tamaulipas State, particularly Reynosa and nearby municipalities, were also urged to stay inside. Additionally, parts of Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon have been identified as regions experiencing heightened security activity.
The embassy emphasized that developments remain fluid and advised the community to stay alert to official announcements.
Details of the Military Operation
Mexican authorities confirmed that Oseguera was killed during a coordinated operation carried out by the Mexican Army. The development marks a significant moment in Mexico’s ongoing battle against organized crime.
Oseguera had long been considered one of the most influential drug cartel leaders in the country. His organization, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, has been linked to widespread trafficking activities and violent confrontations across multiple regions. His death has triggered concerns of retaliatory actions or internal power struggles within criminal networks.
In the aftermath of the operation, security forces reportedly intensified patrols and established checkpoints in sensitive areas to prevent unrest.
Safety Guidelines for Indian Nationals
Along with the advisory, the embassy shared practical safety measures for Indian nationals currently living in or traveling through Mexico. Citizens were urged to avoid areas where law enforcement operations are underway and to remain vigilant about their surroundings.
The mission advised residents to seek shelter and restrict non-essential travel outside their homes. Monitoring local news outlets for verified updates was recommended, as was following instructions issued by Mexican authorities.
In case of emergencies, the embassy reminded individuals to contact Mexico’s emergency number, 911. Avoiding crowded places and minimizing exposure to public gatherings were also highlighted as precautionary steps.
Additionally, Indian nationals were encouraged to stay in touch with family and friends, keeping them informed about their location and well-being through phone calls, messages, or social media updates.
Heightened Security Across Multiple States
Security experts note that major cartel operations often lead to temporary instability in affected regions. Road blockages, vehicle checks, and increased military deployment have been reported in parts of western and northern Mexico following the operation.
While Mexican authorities continue efforts to maintain order, foreign missions have advised their citizens to remain cautious during this period of uncertainty. The Indian Embassy stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue further guidance if necessary.
At present, no specific incidents involving Indian nationals have been reported. However, the advisory underscores the importance of remaining alert during periods of heightened security activity.
Residents are advised to comply fully with local regulations and avoid circulating unverified information that could contribute to confusion.
The embassy’s message serves as a reminder for overseas citizens to stay connected with official communication channels and prioritize personal safety during rapidly evolving situations.
