Within the following 15 hours, the system is expected to deepen into a depression, increasing the likelihood of extensive rains and choppy seas along portions of the Tamil Nadu coast, according to the RMC.

A yellow alert warning of heavy rainfall in isolated areas has been issued for Thursday and Friday in the districts of Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, and Karaikal due to the system’s effect.

Cyclonic activity in January is not unusual, according to B. Amudha, chairman of RMC Chennai. She pointed out that 20 cyclonic disturbances, including depressions, cyclonic storms, and severe cyclonic storms, have developed throughout the month between 1891 and 2024.

The meteorological service predicts that on January 8, there will be isolated areas of light to moderate rain throughout Tamil Nadu, as well as isolated sites over the interior of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as well as a few locations along the coast.

On January 9 and 10, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, and Puducherry are under an orange warning due to the possibility of severe to very heavy rains.

In the meanwhile, the districts of Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Puducherry would be under a yellow alert on January 10 and 11.

Additionally, the RMC has issued a warning of squally weather across the Gulf of Mannar, along and off the coast of Tamil Nadu, and in the nearby Comorin region.

From January 8 to January 10, wind speeds are predicted to be between 45 and 55 kmph, with gusts as high as 65 kmph. During this time, sea conditions are probably going to be severe to extremely rough.

It has been recommended that fishermen around the coast of Tamil Nadu stay out of the water. Over the next two days, those who are already at deep sea have been advised to stay away from the southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal as well as the coastal seas around Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
