Politics – Priyanka Gandhi Slams Arrest of Youth Congress Leaders

Politics –  Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday sharply criticized the police action against members of the Indian Youth Congress, describing it as deeply troubling and inappropriate. Her remarks followed the arrest of Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib in connection with last week’s protest during the AI Summit in New Delhi.

Arrest Sparks Political Response

The Delhi Police named Chib as the alleged “main conspirator” behind the protest staged at the high-profile summit and added rioting charges against him and seven other Youth Congress members who were detained earlier. Authorities claim the demonstration disrupted proceedings at the venue.

The protest took place inside Hall No. 5 of the summit complex, where a group of Youth Congress workers removed their shirts to reveal T-shirts carrying slogans critical of the central government and the proposed India–US interim trade agreement. Security personnel swiftly intervened and escorted the protesters out of the premises.

The incident has since drawn sharp political reactions, escalating tensions between the ruling establishment and the opposition Congress party.

Priyanka Gandhi Calls Action “Shameful”

In a post shared on social media platform X, Priyanka Gandhi defended the Youth Congress workers and framed their protest as part of a long democratic tradition. She said peaceful resistance in pursuit of truth has been a defining feature of India’s history, rooted in the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and countless freedom fighters.

She further argued that speaking out against policies perceived as harmful to national interest is not only legitimate but necessary. According to her, raising concerns about decisions taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government is vital for safeguarding the interests of 1.4 billion Indians.

Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of yielding to international pressure in matters concerning India’s interests, though she did not elaborate on specific details in her statement. She described the police action against the Youth Congress members as condemnable and said the Congress party would stand firmly behind its youth wing.

Congress Alleges Democratic Suppression

The arrests have triggered strong reactions from senior Congress leaders. Rahul Gandhi also criticized the move, calling it an example of what he described as authoritarian tendencies. He suggested that detaining political opponents for staging a protest reflects intolerance toward dissent.

Congress leaders maintain that the demonstration was non-violent and intended to express disagreement with certain policy decisions, particularly those related to international trade negotiations. They argue that democratic systems must allow space for peaceful protest, even in high-security environments.

Police officials, however, have maintained that the action was taken in accordance with the law. According to authorities, security protocols were breached during the summit, necessitating immediate intervention. The addition of rioting charges indicates that investigators believe the protest went beyond simple dissent.

Wider Debate Over Protest Rights

The episode has reignited debate over the boundaries of political protest in India, especially during official and international events. While opposition parties insist that dissent is central to democratic functioning, the government has repeatedly emphasized the need to maintain order and security at public gatherings.

Legal proceedings in the case are expected to continue in the coming days. Meanwhile, the confrontation between the Congress party and the ruling government appears set to intensify as both sides defend their positions.

The controversy underscores ongoing political friction ahead of major policy decisions and highlights broader questions about free expression, public order, and democratic accountability in the country.
