Infrastructure – PM Modi Visits Assam and West Bengal to Launch Major Projects
Infrastructure – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam and West Bengal over two days, where he will participate in several official programmes and inaugurate multiple development projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and connectivity in the region. The visit will include events in several cities of Assam before concluding with engagements in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Government officials said the visit reflects the central government’s continued focus on improving transportation networks and supporting economic development across eastern and northeastern parts of the country.
Development Programmes Across Assam
The Prime Minister’s schedule in Assam includes visits to Kokrajhar, Guwahati and Silchar, where he will take part in a range of public programmes and project inaugurations. These events are expected to bring together representatives from various communities, local leaders and residents from nearby districts.
Before beginning his visit, Modi shared a message on the social media platform X stating that he looks forward to interacting with people during the programmes and introducing several development initiatives that are expected to benefit the region.
The engagements in Assam will focus largely on improving transportation infrastructure and expanding connectivity between different parts of the state as well as with neighboring regions.
Focus on Kokrajhar and Bodo Cultural Region
The Prime Minister’s first stop will be Kokrajhar, a district known for its strong cultural connection with the Bodo community. The region has played an important role in preserving Bodo traditions and cultural identity.
During the programme in Kokrajhar, Modi will lay the foundation stones for several road infrastructure projects that are intended to strengthen regional transportation networks. These projects are expected to improve mobility for local residents and facilitate smoother movement of goods across the area.
Improved road infrastructure is also expected to contribute to economic growth by supporting trade, tourism and access to essential services in rural and semi-urban areas.
Launch of Assam Mala 3.0 Road Initiative
One of the major announcements during the visit will be the launch of Assam Mala 3.0, a large-scale road development programme designed to enhance connectivity across the state.
The initiative aims to upgrade and expand road networks connecting key towns and districts within Assam while also strengthening transportation links with neighboring states. Officials say the programme is part of a broader effort to modernize regional infrastructure and improve accessibility across the Northeast.
Better road connectivity is expected to reduce travel time, improve logistics movement and support economic activity across multiple sectors including agriculture, trade and tourism.
New Train Services to Strengthen Rail Connectivity
In addition to road projects, the Prime Minister will also flag off three new train services aimed at improving railway connectivity between Assam and other parts of eastern India.
The services include the Kamakhya–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express and the Narangi–Agartala Express.
Railway officials say these new routes will make passenger travel more convenient while also improving transportation options for goods and services between states in the region. Enhanced rail connectivity is expected to support tourism, trade and cross-regional movement.
Transition to West Bengal Visit
After completing programmes in Assam, including an event in Silchar on March 14, the Prime Minister will travel to Kolkata in West Bengal to attend additional engagements.
Officials indicated that the events in Kolkata will include further development-related programmes, although detailed schedules are expected to be released closer to the date.
The two-day visit highlights the central government’s broader focus on infrastructure expansion and connectivity improvements across the Northeast and eastern India, regions that have witnessed multiple development initiatives in recent years.
