Incident Reported on Busy LBS Road

The accident occurred at approximately 12:20 pm along Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, one of the main thoroughfares in northeast Mumbai. The site is located opposite the Johnson and Johnson factory, an area that typically sees steady vehicular movement throughout the day.

Officials said a cement slab forming part of the elevated metro pillar suddenly detached and crashed onto the road below. The debris landed directly on an autorickshaw passing underneath, crushing the three-wheeler.

Rescue Teams Rush to the Spot

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade and local police units, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Fire officials indicated that three to four individuals are believed to have sustained injuries, though the exact number and the severity of their condition were yet to be confirmed at the time of reporting.

Members of the company responsible for constructing Metro Line 4 were also present at the site to assist with response efforts and assess the damage. Authorities secured the surrounding area to prevent further risk and to facilitate rescue and clearance operations.

Impact on Traffic and Local Movement

The collapse briefly disrupted traffic flow on LBS Road, a key artery connecting several eastern suburbs. Commuters were diverted as emergency teams worked to clear debris and ensure the area was safe for public movement.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crashing sound before noticing dust and rubble spreading across the road. Several bystanders reportedly rushed to help before official rescue teams arrived.

Ongoing Assessment and Investigation

Officials stated that the immediate priority was attending to the injured and removing damaged material from the roadway. A detailed inspection of the remaining structure is expected to follow to determine the cause of the collapse.

Metro Line 4 is part of Mumbai’s expanding rapid transit network aimed at improving connectivity between eastern suburbs and central business districts. Construction work has been underway at multiple locations along the proposed route.

Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement regarding possible structural failure or safety lapses. Further information is expected once a technical review is conducted.

Safety Measures Under Scrutiny

Incidents at large infrastructure projects often draw attention to construction standards and monitoring practices. While metro projects are typically subject to stringent safety protocols, Saturday’s accident may prompt a review of on-site procedures and quality checks.

Civic officials indicated that updates will be shared after preliminary findings are compiled. For now, rescue operations remain the focus as teams continue to assess the situation and gather information.

More details are awaited as the investigation progresses and authorities provide verified updates.
