Infrastructure – Delhi Government Proposes Rs 1,330 Crore for MCD Road Upgrades

Infrastructure –  The Delhi government has outlined a major financial proposal aimed at strengthening local infrastructure, setting aside nearly Rs 1,330 crore for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the 2026–27 financial year.

Delhi mcd road upgrade plan

The proposed allocation is intended to support an extensive programme of road construction and repairs across the national capital. According to officials, the funds will primarily address civic responsibilities managed by the MCD, including sanitation services and the upkeep of roads measuring less than 60 feet in width.

Focus on Road Construction and Repairs

Under the plan, close to 1,000 kilometres of roads are expected to be constructed, resurfaced or reinforced. Authorities believe the initiative will play a crucial role in reducing dust emissions, which remain a significant contributor to seasonal air pollution in Delhi. Pollution levels typically rise after the monsoon, particularly in October and November, when loose soil and damaged road surfaces add to airborne particulate matter.

By strengthening road surfaces and addressing worn-out stretches, the government hopes to minimise dust generation and improve overall commuting conditions. Officials noted that better road quality would not only help manage pollution but also enhance traffic flow and safety in several neighbourhoods.

Chief Minister Stresses Timely Completion

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the funding proposal as part of a broader push toward decentralised governance and improved coordination between city authorities. She said the allocation demonstrates the administration’s intent to empower municipal bodies with adequate financial resources to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

During a review meeting on Monday, the Chief Minister directed senior officials to ensure that all major road-related works are completed by 30 September 2026. She underscored the importance of adhering to strict timelines, calling for faster administrative clearances and early groundwork to prevent delays once projects commence.

Gupta also highlighted the need for transparency in the tendering process. Clear procedures and accountability mechanisms, she said, would help maintain public trust while ensuring that projects are delivered without unnecessary cost escalations.

Additional Support Through Development Fund

Apart from the primary allocation for road works, the government has earmarked supplementary resources under the Chief Minister’s Development Fund. These funds are expected to support targeted improvement projects in various localities, addressing area-specific infrastructure concerns.

Officials indicated that the combined financial backing is designed to strengthen civic services at the grassroots level. By delegating responsibility and ensuring adequate budgetary support, the administration aims to create a more responsive urban management system.

Major Investment in Sanitation Modernisation

In addition to road infrastructure, the government has approved a significant sanitation overhaul plan valued at Rs 2,300 crore. Structured as a 10-year operational expenditure project, the initiative is intended to modernise waste management systems across the city.

Authorities said the sanitation upgrade will focus on improving collection efficiency, upgrading equipment and introducing improved operational practices. The long-term investment is expected to streamline municipal services and raise cleanliness standards in residential and commercial areas alike.

The combined emphasis on roads and sanitation reflects a broader strategy to address infrastructure gaps while tackling environmental concerns. By aligning financial planning with civic priorities, the government hopes to deliver measurable improvements in both public health and urban mobility.

If implemented within the proposed timeline, the projects could mark a significant step toward reinforcing Delhi’s infrastructure network and strengthening municipal service delivery ahead of the 2026–27 fiscal cycle.
