Himachal Pradesh: A private bus in fell down a gorge near Sirmaur, killing 14 people
Himachal Pradesh: On Friday, January 9, 2026, a private bus crashed down a steep canyon at Haripurdhar in the Sirmaur region of Himachal Pradesh, killing at least 14 people—including the driver and a little girl—and injuring over 50 more. The bus was reportedly on its way from Shimla to Kupvi when it swerved off the road and plunged into a canyon that was around 100 meters deep in Haripurdhar hamlet, which is about 95 kilometers from Nahan, the district seat. According to reports, the car was totally wrecked after landing upside down.

Six individuals reportedly passed away immediately, and eight more died while receiving care. There are still a number of critically wounded people, and the number of fatalities might increase.
Before police and emergency personnel could reach, locals raced to the scene of the accident and assisted with rescue operations. The wounded were sent to hospitals in Sangrah, Dadahu, and Nahan after rescue and evacuation efforts were initiated right after.
In addition to expressing sorrow over the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will provide Rs 50,000 for the wounded and Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to the relatives of the deceased.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, also offered condolences and instructed district authorities to assist the victims’ relatives in every way they can and to make sure the wounded get the care they need.
Medical staff at Dadahu, Sangrah, and Nahan hospitals were on high alert, according to State Industry Minister and local MLA Harshwardhan Chauhan.
The reason of the accident is yet unknown, however preliminary reports indicated the bus went off the road.
