GulfCrisis – Six Indians Dead, One Missing Amid West Asia Tensions

GulfCrisis – India is grappling with the loss of six of its citizens in separate incidents across the Gulf region, while another individual remains unaccounted for, as tensions continue to affect parts of West Asia.

Gulf crisis indians dead missing

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the developments on Friday, stating that Indian diplomatic missions are actively working with local authorities to support affected families and ensure the safe return of mortal remains.

Fatal Incident Reported in Riyadh

One of the most recent cases involved the death of an Indian national in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 18. Officials have not yet clarified the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a message shared publicly, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the loss as tragic. The embassy also confirmed that it is maintaining close communication with both the family and Saudi authorities to provide necessary assistance and complete formalities related to repatriation.

Diplomatic Efforts Underway Across Region

During an interministerial briefing, Aseem R. Mahajan, Additional Secretary overseeing Gulf affairs at the MEA, said that Indian missions in several countries are coordinating efforts to address the situation.

According to Mahajan, diplomatic teams in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates are in regular contact with local agencies. Their immediate priorities include tracing the missing Indian national and expediting the return of the deceased individuals to India.

He emphasized that the government remains committed to offering all possible support to the families affected by these incidents.

Gradual Improvement in Travel Situation

Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing regional tensions, authorities have noted a steady improvement in travel conditions. Since late February, a large number of Indian nationals have successfully returned home.

Officials reported that approximately 300,000 passengers have traveled back to India from various Gulf countries since February 28. This has been made possible through a mix of scheduled and special flights arranged in coordination with airlines and local governments.

Limited Flight Operations Continue

Air travel in the region remains partially restricted, with airlines operating under safety and operational constraints. From the United Arab Emirates, carriers are continuing to run limited non-scheduled flights.

On Friday alone, around 90 flights were expected to depart from UAE airports to different Indian cities, reflecting a gradual normalization of air connectivity.

Flights are also ongoing from Saudi Arabia and Oman, helping ease the movement of passengers who had been stranded due to disruptions.

Partial Reopening of Qatar Airspace

In a positive development, Qatar has partially reopened its airspace, allowing some commercial flight operations to resume. Qatar Airways is expected to operate around 10 special flights to India, providing additional travel options for passengers.

However, restrictions remain in place in certain areas. Airspace in Kuwait and Bahrain continues to be closed, creating logistical challenges for travelers.

Alternative Travel Arrangements for Stranded Passengers

To address these challenges, alternative flight arrangements have been introduced. Kuwait Airways has planned special flights from Al Qaisumah International Airport in Saudi Arabia to India, with the first service scheduled to depart for Kochi.

Similarly, Bahrain’s national carrier, Gulf Air, is operating special flights from King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia to facilitate passenger movement.

These measures aim to ensure that Indian nationals in affected regions can return home safely despite ongoing restrictions.

Government Monitoring Situation Closely

Indian authorities continue to monitor developments in West Asia closely. Officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian citizens abroad, particularly in regions experiencing instability.

Efforts remain focused on providing timely assistance, maintaining coordination with local governments, and ensuring that travel and evacuation processes proceed smoothly.
