Fire – A devastating fire swept through a large slum settlement near the Matiala fish market in Delhi late Wednesday night, reducing hundreds of makeshift homes to ashes and leaving many families without shelter. Fire breaks out late at night

Officials from the Delhi Fire Service reported that the incident occurred close to midnight. Emergency calls regarding the fire began coming in around 11.50 p.m., and fire crews were immediately dispatched to the site. According to preliminary information, the blaze intensified rapidly due to the tightly clustered huts and the presence of highly flammable materials commonly used in temporary dwellings.

Firefighters worked through the night to contain the flames, which had already spread across a large section of the settlement by the time they arrived. The chaotic scene saw residents trying to escape the fire while others attempted to save personal belongings before the flames consumed their homes.

Large firefighting operation launched

Authorities deployed 24 fire tenders along with senior firefighting personnel to tackle the blaze. Officials categorized the incident as a medium-intensity fire, but the scale of destruction was significant because of the number of structures affected.

Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before managing to bring the situation under control at around 4.00 a.m. After the main fire was extinguished, teams carried out cooling operations to prevent any remaining embers from reigniting and to ensure that nearby areas remained safe.

Hundreds of homes destroyed, families left homeless

Initial assessments indicate that between 300 and 400 slum dwellings were destroyed in the incident. Although the loss of property is extensive, authorities confirmed that no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far.

For many residents, however, the impact has been severe. The fire destroyed not only their homes but also everyday necessities such as clothing, kitchen supplies, documents, and food. By morning, several families were seen searching through the charred remains of their huts, hoping to recover anything that survived the flames.

Local residents described the situation as overwhelming, with many saying they had lost nearly all their possessions in the incident.

Residents raise concerns about cause of fire

While officials have begun an investigation to determine how the fire started, some residents have expressed suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the blaze. A few locals claimed that the fire may have been deliberately started, though authorities have not confirmed these allegations.

According to people living in the area, there had previously been pressure on residents to vacate the land. Some residents also alleged that money had been collected from them under the name of the Delhi Development Authority, though these claims remain unverified.

Several residents also pointed out that a smaller fire had occurred nearby only a few days earlier, raising further concerns within the community.

Families appeal for assistance

Many of the affected families are now facing an uncertain future as they struggle to find shelter and basic necessities. Residents say they urgently need food, drinking water, and temporary housing assistance.

One resident said the fire started late at night and spread rapidly before help arrived. Another affected family member expressed worry about how they would provide for their children after losing everything.

Others who had lived in the settlement for many years described the emotional shock of seeing their homes destroyed within a few hours. One resident said they were away when the fire began and returned to find nothing but ashes where their house once stood.

Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and are expected to review relief measures for the displaced families. Meanwhile, officials are also working to determine the exact cause of the fire as part of the ongoing investigation.
