Elections – TMC Seeks Six Seats Ahead of Tamil Nadu Polls

Elections –   The Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) has informally communicated its request for six Assembly constituencies within the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as political activity gathers momentum ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Early Signals Before Formal Talks

Although official seat-sharing discussions have not yet commenced within the alliance, political sources suggest that preliminary conversations are already underway. The TMC’s reported demand is seen as an early move aimed at strengthening its position before formal negotiations begin.

With the state moving closer to election season, parties across Tamil Nadu have begun sharpening their strategies. The Election Commission is widely expected to announce the polling schedule in March, with voting likely to follow in April. In response, political organisations have accelerated groundwork that includes constituency reviews, cadre mobilisation, public meetings, and internal surveys.

AIADMK-Led NDA Prepares for Negotiations

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is spearheading the NDA in Tamil Nadu. The alliance presently includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), Puthiya Neethi Katchi, Puratchi Bharatham, the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) led by Parivendhar, and Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam headed by John Pandian.

Despite the absence of formal talks, alliance partners are believed to have started identifying constituencies they are keen to contest. Political observers note that such informal positioning is common before structured negotiations begin, particularly in multi-party alliances where balancing interests is often complex.

The TMC’s request for six seats has drawn attention within political circles. During the previous electoral cycle, the party was accommodated with a Rajya Sabha berth as part of alliance arrangements. Analysts believe that this earlier understanding could influence discussions as negotiations progress. However, alliance leaders will likely have to weigh competing demands from multiple partners before finalising a formula.

Shifting Political Equations

Recent developments in the state’s political landscape have added another layer of complexity. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which was earlier expected to align with the AIADMK, has instead moved towards the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led camp. This shift has reportedly encouraged other NDA constituents to reassess their expectations and push for a greater share of seats.

Political analysts point out that such realignments often influence bargaining positions within alliances. With one potential ally moving out, existing partners may see an opportunity to negotiate from a stronger standpoint.

DMK-Led Alliance Advances Talks

On the other side of the political spectrum, the DMK has already initiated structured discussions with its allies under the INDIA bloc framework. The DMK-led alliance includes the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), DMDK, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).

Sources indicate that meetings have taken place with several alliance partners. There are also indications that the DMK leadership has encouraged certain parties to consider contesting fewer constituencies compared to previous elections, reflecting an effort to streamline the alliance’s electoral strategy.

Crucial Weeks Ahead

As both major alliances begin internal assessments and preliminary negotiations, seat-sharing arrangements are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the political contest. In Tamil Nadu, alliance arithmetic has historically influenced electoral outcomes, making these discussions critical to each bloc’s strategy.

With the announcement of the election schedule anticipated in the coming weeks, formal negotiations are likely to intensify. Political observers suggest that clarity on seat allocation will provide a clearer picture of the alliances’ strength and readiness for the 2026 Assembly battle.
