Voting Begins Across Pune Rural District

Polling commenced at 7:30 am in the Pune rural district, where authorities reported steady voter participation throughout the morning. Officials confirmed that all necessary arrangements were made in advance to ensure a smooth and orderly process.

Narayan Deshmukh, Senior Police Inspector at Yavat Police Station, stated that extensive security measures were deployed across the region. Under the Yavat jurisdiction alone, 211 polling booths are operational, each monitored by dedicated police personnel. Additional forces have been stationed at sensitive locations to prevent any disruption.

Deshmukh noted that officers are conducting patrols across eleven designated sectors to maintain vigilance. Voters have been advised not to carry mobile phones into polling booths and to follow all guidelines issued by the election authorities. According to police officials, the atmosphere remains calm and conducive to peaceful voting.

Polling in 12 Zila Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis

The elections are being conducted for 12 Zila Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis across the state. Voting is taking place in regions including Konkan, Western Maharashtra, and districts such as Latur, Dharashiv, and Parbhani in Marathwada.

Election officials confirmed that counting of votes will begin at 10:00 am on February 9 at designated counting centres. The names of successful candidates are expected to be officially published in the Government Gazette by February 11.

The remaining stages of the electoral process include counting, declaration of results, and formal notification of elected members. Once the results are announced, the Model Code of Conduct will no longer apply in the concerned areas.

Polling Date Rescheduled After State Mourning

Originally scheduled for February 5, the polling was postponed to February 7 following the death of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in Baramati on January 28. The state observed a three-day mourning period in his honour, prompting the Election Commission to revise the schedule.

Similarly, the vote counting date was shifted from February 7 to February 9 to accommodate the changes. Authorities clarified that the decision was taken to ensure respectful observance of mourning while maintaining the integrity of the election process.

Leadership Transition in Maharashtra Government

Sunetra Pawar recently assumed office as Deputy Chief Minister after the untimely demise of Ajit Pawar, who also served as the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party. With her appointment, she became the first woman to hold the Deputy Chief Minister’s position in Maharashtra.

She has been entrusted with the portfolios of State Excise, Sports and Youth Affairs, and Minorities Development and Aukaf. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken charge of the Planning and Finance departments that were previously overseen by Ajit Pawar.

Following her swearing-in ceremony, Sunetra Pawar shared a message expressing her commitment to continue working for farmers, labourers, women, youth, and marginalized communities. She stated that she accepts the responsibility with a sense of duty and dedication to the guiding principles associated with social reformers whose ideas have shaped Maharashtra’s political and social landscape.

As voting continues across districts, authorities remain focused on ensuring that the democratic process unfolds peacefully and transparently. With counting scheduled for early next week, attention will soon turn to the electoral outcome and its implications for local governance in the state
