Elections – BJP Unveils First Candidate List for Assam Polls

Elections – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its initial list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, marking a significant phase in the state’s political preparations. The list reflects notable shifts, including the inclusion of prominent leaders who recently switched allegiance from the Congress.

Key Leaders Join BJP Ahead of Polls

Among the most prominent names is Pradyut Bordoloi, a sitting Lok Sabha MP, who has been nominated from the Dispur constituency. Bordoloi recently ended his long association with the Congress and joined the BJP in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. His entry into the BJP is being viewed as a strategic move ahead of the elections.

Another former Congress heavyweight, Bhupen Kumar Borah, has been fielded from Bihpuria. Borah, who previously served as the state Congress president, had shifted to the BJP just weeks ago. He had contested from Bihpuria in the last two elections but faced defeat both times. Now, with BJP backing, he is aiming to secure a win and return to the Assembly.

Chief Minister and Senior Leaders in Fray

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will once again contest from Jalukbari, a constituency he has represented for several terms. His candidature from this seat was widely expected, given his strong political presence in the region.

The BJP has also retained several key leaders in its candidate list. Minister Pijush Hazarika will contest from Jagiroad, while Rupali Langthasa has been nominated from Haflong. Prasanta Phukan is set to represent the party from Dibrugarh.

In Jorhat, sitting MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami will defend his seat against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, setting up a high-profile contest in the constituency.

Candidate Withdrawal Brings Clarity

In a related development, Prateek Bordoloi has withdrawn his candidacy from the Margherita constituency. His decision follows his father Pradyut Bordoloi’s move to join the BJP.

In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek explained that continuing as a candidate under the current circumstances could create confusion among voters and party workers. He emphasized the importance of maintaining clarity about his political commitment and the party’s position, stating that it would not be fair to continue amid changing affiliations within his family.

Election Schedule Announced

These developments come as Assam gears up for its Assembly elections. The Election Commission of India has announced that polling for all 126 constituencies will be conducted in a single phase on April 9. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

With major political parties finalizing their candidates and strategies, the electoral contest in Assam is expected to be closely watched. The inclusion of leaders who recently changed parties adds another layer of interest to the evolving political landscape.
