Elections – BJP Leadership Holds Key Meeting to Plan Kerala Poll Strategy

Elections –  The Bharatiya Janata Party convened an important parliamentary board meeting on Thursday evening to review preparations and discuss candidate selection for the upcoming Kerala Legislative Assembly elections. The meeting took place at the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and was attended by several senior party leaders responsible for shaping the party’s electoral roadmap in the state.

The discussion was part of a broader strategy session that also included deliberations related to the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. Party leaders used the opportunity to assess political conditions in key regions and refine their approach ahead of the Election Commission’s formal announcement of the poll schedule.

Senior leaders review political situation

The Kerala-focused segment of the meeting began around 5:30 pm and continued for nearly two hours. Several senior figures of the party were present during the discussions, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former party president JP Nadda, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and veteran leader BS Yediyurappa.

Other leaders who attended the meeting included Rajiv Chandrashekhar, former Kerala BJP president K Surendran, election co-incharge Shobha Karandlaje, Vinod Tawde, V Murlidharan, and Prakash Javadekar. According to party sources, the presence of both central and state leaders reflected the importance the BJP is placing on the upcoming elections in Kerala.

During the session, leaders reviewed political feedback from various districts and examined the party’s prospects across several constituencies.

Discussions on constituencies and candidate selection

Sources familiar with the meeting indicated that detailed discussions were held regarding roughly 140 assembly constituencies across the state. Leaders evaluated potential candidates, reviewed survey data gathered by private agencies, and compared multiple reports to gauge local political dynamics.

Party strategists also discussed voter sentiment, regional issues, and campaign themes that could shape the party’s manifesto for Kerala. The aim, according to insiders, was to identify candidates who can strengthen the party’s outreach while reflecting the demographic and political diversity of the state.

Another significant part of the meeting focused on ticket distribution and the criteria that may guide the selection of candidates for the upcoming election.

Greater focus on women, youth and new candidates

Sources said the party leadership is considering giving a larger share of tickets to women and younger leaders in the upcoming contest. Approximately 20 percent of the candidates may be women, while around 25 percent of the tickets could be allotted to young leaders.

The strategy is expected to include a mix of experienced politicians and new faces in order to expand the party’s appeal among different sections of voters. Leaders also discussed ways to strengthen the party’s presence in areas where it has traditionally struggled to gain electoral support.

Possible candidates and community outreach

The meeting also explored potential candidate names for several constituencies. According to sources, Union Minister George Kurian could be considered for a ticket in an effort to strengthen outreach among Christian voters in the state.

Former Kerala BJP president K Surendran is likely to be fielded from the Manjeshwar constituency, while state party president Rajiv Chandrashekhar may contest from the Nemom seat in Thiruvananthapuram. Final decisions, however, will be announced only after the Election Commission formally declares the election schedule.

Alliance partners and candidate list plans

The BJP is expected to contest more than one hundred seats in Kerala, while the remaining constituencies may be allotted to its alliance partners. These partners are likely to include the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), the Twenty20 party, and other regional groups.

Party sources said the candidate list may be released in two phases once the election dates are announced. The phased announcement is expected to allow the party leadership to finalize candidates after reviewing ground reports and alliance arrangements.

Further meetings scheduled for other states

The parliamentary board’s discussions are not limited to Kerala. Party leaders have also scheduled another strategy meeting between March 15 and March 17 to focus on electoral preparations in Tamil Nadu, Assam, and several other states that are expected to go to polls.

These meetings are aimed at coordinating campaign planning, finalizing candidate selections, and assessing political conditions across multiple regions ahead of upcoming elections.
