Early Launch to Strengthen Public School Admissions

Continuing a strategy adopted last year, the department has chosen to open the enrolment process well ahead of the new academic term. The decision was originally introduced to keep pace with private schools, many of which start accepting applications several months in advance. Officials believe that beginning admissions early gives parents sufficient time to evaluate government schools before making decisions about private institutions.

By maintaining this schedule, the department hopes to secure a larger share of first-time enrolments and reinforce the presence of public education across urban and rural regions.

Focus on Five-Year-Old Children

Clear instructions have been issued to headmasters and teaching staff to prioritise children who have completed five years of age in anganwadis. Authorities have directed schools to ensure that these children are admitted to neighbourhood government institutions or schools located close to their homes.

The emphasis on early-age admissions is part of a broader effort to ensure that no eligible child remains outside the formal education system. Local-level coordination has also been strengthened to identify children ready for entry into Class 1.

Awareness Campaigns to Highlight Improvements

As part of the enrolment initiative, education officials have been tasked with conducting outreach programmes aimed at informing parents about the progress made in government schools in recent years.

The department plans to showcase upgraded infrastructure, including smart classrooms, modern laboratories, improved sanitation facilities, and digital learning tools introduced under various state schemes. Officials say these developments reflect sustained investment in public education and are intended to reassure parents about the quality of instruction provided in government institutions.

Trained teachers, enhanced curriculum support, and student welfare programmes are also being highlighted during the campaign to strengthen public confidence.

Incentives for Schools to Increase Admissions

To encourage active participation from individual schools, the department has announced a recognition programme. Institutions that enrol at least 50 more students than they did in the previous academic year will receive certificates of appreciation.

Officials believe that acknowledging such efforts will motivate school leaders and teachers to intensify community outreach. By engaging directly with families and local communities, schools are expected to create greater awareness about available facilities and academic opportunities.

Data-Driven Outreach Strategy

According to senior education department officials, around 4.3 lakh students were admitted to government schools during the last academic year. They noted that nearly half of school-going children in the state currently attend government or government-aided schools, while the remaining half opt for private institutions.

Official estimates indicate that more than eight lakh children in the five-year age group will be eligible for fresh enrolment this year. This data is being used to shape the outreach strategy and identify areas where enrolment efforts need to be strengthened.

The department has reiterated that its primary goal is to ensure universal access to schooling while also increasing the overall proportion of students choosing government institutions.

Minister to Inaugurate State-Level Campaign

The statewide enrolment drive will be formally launched by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Monday. Officials expect the event to mark the beginning of coordinated efforts across districts to meet the admission target.

With structured planning, early outreach, and renewed focus on infrastructure and quality, the department is aiming not only to meet its numerical goal but also to reinforce trust in the public education system ahead of the new academic year.
