DelhiPolice – Contractor Arrested After Fatal Janakpuri Pit Accident That Killed Biker

DelhiPolice -The Delhi Police have arrested a contractor linked to a fatal road accident in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area, where a 25-year-old man died after his motorcycle plunged into an uncovered construction pit last month. Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the accused, who had been avoiding arrest since the incident, was finally located and taken into custody following a month-long search.

Arrest Made After Month-Long Search

According to police officials, the contractor, identified as Himanshu Gupta, had been on the run since the accident occurred in early February. Investigators used technical surveillance to track his movements, eventually tracing his location to Udaipur in Rajasthan.

A police team was dispatched to the city, where officers conducted a raid at the location where Gupta was hiding. He was arrested early Tuesday morning and is currently being transported to Delhi for further legal proceedings.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Darade Sharad Bhaskar confirmed that Gupta is the primary contractor associated with the Delhi Jal Board project at the accident site. Authorities believe his role in the construction work will be a key focus of the ongoing investigation.

Investigation May Reveal Additional Responsibility

Police officials stated that Gupta will be produced before a court in Delhi, where investigators will seek custody for questioning. According to the DCP, several aspects of the case still require examination, and more details are expected to emerge once the contractor is interrogated.

So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. Authorities said Gupta’s arrest is significant because he was the main contractor responsible for the work being carried out at the location where the pit was left open.

Investigators have also indicated that further legal action may be taken if additional individuals are found to have played a role in the negligence that led to the accident. Officials added that Gupta operates his own company and frequently undertakes projects for the Delhi Jal Board.

Family Seeks Justice for Victim

Family members of the deceased, Kamal Dhyani, said they are hoping the investigation will deliver justice and ensure accountability for the tragedy. They described the loss as devastating and said no punishment can truly compensate for the life that was lost.

Relatives emphasized that strict action against those responsible is essential not only for justice but also to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. They said the tragedy has left the family with an irreplaceable void and highlighted the importance of safer construction practices on public roads.

Accident Occurred While Victim Was Returning Home

The incident took place on the night between February 5 and 6. Kamal Dhyani, a resident of Kailashpuri, had been returning home after finishing his shift at a call centre operated by a private bank in Rohini.

During his journey through Janakpuri, his motorcycle reportedly fell into a pit approximately 15 feet deep that had been left uncovered at the construction site. The fall resulted in fatal injuries.

An eyewitness, Vipin Singh, told authorities that he noticed the accident while driving home to Sagarpur after attending a relative’s wedding in Rohini. Singh said he saw the motorcycle fall into the pit and immediately alerted a nearby security guard. The guard then informed a labourer working at the site.

Court Sends Contractor to Judicial Custody

Following his arrest, Gupta was produced before Duty Magistrate Anuradha Sonkar at a Delhi court on Tuesday. The court remanded him to one day of judicial custody.

Earlier in the case, the Delhi High Court had declined anticipatory bail to two contractors, including Himanshu Gupta and Kavish Gupta. The court observed that public roads cannot be allowed to become dangerous hazards for commuters.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and that accountability will be determined as more evidence is examined.
