CasteReform – In a significant development from rural Maharashtra, Soundala village in Ahilyanagar district has formally declared itself a caste-free community. The decision, taken collectively by residents, seeks to eliminate caste-based identity and discrimination within the village and promote equality in everyday life.
Gram Sabha Passes Landmark Resolution
The resolution was adopted during a Gram Sabha meeting held on February 5. During the gathering, villagers revisited the principles enshrined in the Constitution of India, including the ideals outlined in its Preamble. The resolution clearly states that from this point forward, no individual in Soundala will engage in caste-based practices or identify themselves through caste markers.
Instead, the village has chosen to embrace humanity as its guiding principle. The document emphasizes that human values should take precedence over inherited social divisions, and that collective harmony is essential for community progress.
Equal Access to Public Spaces and Services
The resolution outlines practical steps to ensure the new declaration is reflected in daily life. It affirms that all government and community services in the village will be accessible to every resident without discrimination. Public facilities such as schools, community halls, temples, wells, and cremation grounds will remain open to all, regardless of background.
In addition, the Gram Sabha has urged villagers to avoid sharing divisive or caste-based content on social media. Any attempt to spread messages that create social divisions will invite action from the village panchayat. The resolution underscores that maintaining unity and mutual respect is a shared responsibility.
The document further states, “My caste is humanity,” reinforcing the village’s commitment to an inclusive identity that moves beyond traditional classifications.
Inspiration from Social Reformers
Village leaders said the initiative draws inspiration from prominent social reformers and national figures who advocated equality and justice. The resolution acknowledges the influence of B. R. Ambedkar, Jyotirao Phule, Shahu Maharaj, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and Mahatma Gandhi. Each of these leaders, in different ways, championed social justice and worked toward reducing inequality in Indian society.
By invoking their legacy, the village aims to align its local governance model with broader constitutional and reformist ideals.
Leadership and Community Support
The proposal was introduced by village sarpanch Sharad Argade and supported by resident Babasaheb Bhodak. After discussion, the motion was passed with a majority vote, reflecting broad backing within the community.
According to the sarpanch, the newly adopted guidelines are fully consistent with existing laws and constitutional provisions. He clarified that the resolution does not contradict any legal framework but rather strengthens the principles of equality and fraternity already guaranteed under the Constitution.
The decision also includes provisions for penalties in cases where individuals act in ways that undermine constitutional values or attempt to reintroduce caste-based distinctions. Village authorities have indicated that compliance with the resolution will be monitored to ensure its effective implementation.
