Aviation – Indian Air Force Sukhoi-30 Crash in Assam Claims Two Pilots

Aviation – The Indian Air Force confirmed that a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a routine training sortie on Thursday evening, resulting in the deaths of both pilots on board.

Indian air force sukhoi crash assa

The aircraft, a Russian-origin Sukhoi-30 MKI operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF), had departed from the Jorhat airbase earlier in the evening as part of a standard training mission. Officials said contact with the aircraft was suddenly lost at approximately 7:42 pm, prompting immediate concern among air force authorities and triggering a search operation in the region.

Radar Contact Lost During Routine Training Mission

According to preliminary information released by officials, the fighter jet disappeared from radar shortly after the evening sortie began. Air traffic controllers at the Jorhat base attempted to re-establish communication with the aircraft, but repeated attempts were unsuccessful.

Soon after the loss of contact, authorities suspected a possible crash and began coordinating with local agencies to determine the aircraft’s last known position. The suspected crash site was believed to be located in the hilly and forested terrain of Karbi Anglong district, which can be difficult to access quickly during emergencies.

Two Air Force Pilots Confirmed Dead

The Indian Air Force later confirmed that both pilots on board the aircraft lost their lives in the crash. The deceased officers were identified as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar.

In an official statement shared on social media Friday morning, the Indian Air Force expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the two officers. The statement said the entire force stands in solidarity with their families during this difficult time.

Officials described the pilots as experienced personnel who were carrying out a routine operational training task when the accident occurred.

Search and Rescue Operation Launched

As soon as reports emerged that an aircraft might have gone down in Karbi Anglong on Thursday evening, emergency response teams were mobilized. Search and rescue units from the Indian Air Force, along with local police and administrative authorities, were deployed to locate the aircraft and assess the situation.

Teams worked through the night to reach the suspected crash site. The difficult terrain and limited visibility after sunset made the operation challenging, but rescue teams continued efforts to locate the wreckage and confirm the fate of the crew.

Investigation Likely to Determine Cause

While the Indian Air Force has confirmed the crash and the loss of the pilots, the exact cause of the accident has not yet been publicly disclosed. As is standard procedure in such incidents, a formal inquiry is expected to be initiated to determine what led to the crash.

Investigators typically examine several possible factors, including technical issues, weather conditions, and operational circumstances at the time of the flight. The findings of the inquiry will help determine the sequence of events leading up to the accident and whether additional safety measures are required.

Sukhoi-30 MKI: Key Aircraft in IAF Fleet

The Sukhoi-30 MKI is one of the most advanced and widely used fighter aircraft in the Indian Air Force fleet. Developed originally in Russia and customized for India, the aircraft is designed for air superiority missions as well as ground attack operations.

The twin-engine, multi-role fighter plays a central role in India’s air defense capability and is regularly used in training exercises and operational missions across the country.

Although the aircraft has a strong operational record, accidents involving military jets occasionally occur due to a combination of technical and operational factors. Each incident is carefully examined to improve safety standards and operational procedures.

Condolences From the Air Force Community

The Indian Air Force said its personnel are deeply saddened by the loss of the two officers. The service emphasized its commitment to supporting the families of Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar during the period of mourning.

Such losses are felt strongly within the military community, where pilots regularly undertake demanding training missions as part of maintaining operational readiness.

Further details about the crash and the investigation are expected to emerge after officials complete their preliminary assessments at the crash site.
