In a post on X, US House of Representatives member Congressman Fine said that he has submitted the “Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act,” a piece of legislation that would give the US President the power to utilize all available channels to annex Greenland to the US Union.

Fine presented the action as necessary to protect US national security and combat China’s and Russia’s expanding influence in the Arctic, an assertion also made by the US President.

The legislator also claimed that US enemies are trying to gain ground in the Arctic and made the case that obtaining Greenland would assist safeguard America’s northern flank and stop competing nations from dominating the area.Fantastic News! I’m pleased to present the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act today, which gives the president the authority to choose how best to incorporate Greenland into the Union. To be clear, we cannot allow our enemies to get a foothold in the Arctic. “We would secure our northern flank from China and Russia and stop our enemies from controlling the Arctic Region by acquiring Greenland,” his message said.

The Florida congressman called Greenland a “vital national security asset” and cautioned that control of the island would decide domination over important Arctic trade channels and the larger security architecture safeguarding the United States in a news statement released by Fine’s office.

He said that while China and Russia continued to increase their presence in the Arctic, America’s strategic position had deteriorated due to years of ineffective policy. We cannot afford to overlook Greenland as a remote outpost; it is an essential component of our national security. The security infrastructure safeguarding the United States and important commercial channels in the Arctic are under the jurisdiction of whomever controls Greenland. The congressman said, “America cannot leave that future in the hands of regimes that hate our values and aim to jeopardize our security.”

In order to annex or otherwise acquire Greenland as a US territory, the statute gives the President the authority to negotiate with the Kingdom of Denmark.

If Greenland adopted a constitution that was judged republican in form and compatible with the US Constitution, the US President would have to report to Congress after any such acquisition detailing the adjustments to federal law necessary to accept Greenland as a state.

Fine used remarks by Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the Arctic is quickly emerging as a key battlefield of global power conflict in order to connect the measure to more general Republican claims about reestablishing American dominance on the international scene.

Additionally, he said that previous US measures had foes “on their heels,” presenting the planned annexation as a move toward a more robust foreign policy stance.

The biggest island in the world, Greenland, is a NATO ally of the United States and a self-governing province of Denmark. Both Greenlandic and Danish officials have emphasized that the future of Greenland should be determined by its own people and have consistently rejected any idea that the island may be sold or annexed.

Trump reaffirmed earlier on Saturday that the US must do “something” regarding Greenland, either “the easy way” or “the hard way,” claiming that Washington does not want to have China and Russia as neighbors and that they will intervene if the US did nothing.Whether they like it or not, we will take action on Greenland because if we don’t, China or Russia will annex it and we won’t have them as neighbors. When asked about the island, Trump said, “I would like to make a deal the easy way, but if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way.”
