Representative Rich McCormick said that PM Modi’s strategy has a strong national focus in line with India’s development objectives while speaking at a Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) event. According to McCormick, “Prime Minister Modi is extremely nationalistic in a good way.”

“He is taking care of his nation in the same way that we do. McCormick, who is co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus, said that he wants to introduce innovations, productivity, and growth to his nation.

According to McCormick, US politicians are aware of PM Modi’s focus on developing indigenous capabilities, particularly in manufacturing and defense. He said that although certain Indian policies may make cooperation more difficult, they are based on national goals. “He wants the military to be built up inside of his country,” he added.

McCormick also highlighted areas of conflict, such as India’s energy acquisitions. “We hate that,” he remarked, referring to India’s purchase of cheap Russian oil. However, he is acting in his nation’s best interest in order to use inexpensive energy to grow his economy.

Despite these disagreements, McCormick emphasized that PM Modi understands the value of cooperation with the US. He said, “I think he realizes how important we are because we have similar interests.”

The longest-serving Indian American member of Congress, Representative Ami Bera, said that PM Modi’s term corresponds with India’s emergence as a key component of US policy. Bera mentioned consistency throughout many US administrations when he said, “India has been very key to our whole Indo-Pacific strategy.”

“PM Modi is a very powerful political figure,” McCormick said. He said, “I think he’s the most popular politician in modern history by far, probably the most popular guy since Gandhi.”

He also emphasized how important it was for PM Modi to comprehend India’s diversity. In regard to personal experience of India’s socioeconomic and cultural diversity, McCormick stated the prime minister once declared that he does not trust any politician who has not “rode the train from south to north or north to south in coach.”

According to both parliamentarians, PM Modi has an innate grasp of the intricacy of democracy because of his style of government. McCormick cited India’s variety in politics, religion, and language when he said, “The United States and India have to think similar in the way that we approach our population.”

According to Bera, India’s increasing foreign trust has corresponded with PM Modi’s leadership. India’s trajectory is changing global economic and geopolitical calculations, he said, adding, “They see how fast the Indian domestic market is growing.”
