Security – Canada Issues Travel Advisory After Jalisco Violence
Security – Canada has warned its citizens to exercise heightened caution in Mexico’s Jalisco State after a wave of violence followed a major security operation targeting a notorious cartel figure. The advisory comes as authorities in Mexico continue efforts to stabilise the region after armed confrontations and road disruptions unsettled parts of the state.

Canadian Government Monitoring Rapidly Changing Situation
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Ottawa is keeping a close watch on developments in Jalisco, particularly in and around Guadalajara and the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta. In a statement shared on social media platform X, she described the security environment as serious and evolving quickly.
According to the statement, reports from the ground point to armed clashes, burning vehicles and roadblocks in several areas. Local officials in certain communities have asked residents to remain indoors while security forces respond to the unrest. Canadian authorities noted that the situation remains fluid and could shift further in the coming days.
Ottawa stressed that the safety of Canadians abroad is its foremost concern. Global Affairs Canada has updated its travel guidance and is working alongside local authorities to provide assistance if required. Consular officials are maintaining contact with partners in the region and stand ready to support Canadians who may be affected.
Violence Follows Military Operation
The unrest erupted after Mexican military forces carried out an operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. He had long been considered one of the country’s most wanted criminal figures.
Authorities said the operation prompted retaliatory actions in some areas, including blockades and other disturbances. Security forces have since been deployed to contain the situation and restore order. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel has been linked to organised crime activities across multiple states, making the aftermath of the operation particularly sensitive.
This marks the first time Canada has issued a travel advisory specifically tied to the recent escalation in Jalisco. While Canada regularly updates its travel guidance for destinations worldwide, officials described the current step as a precaution in response to credible security concerns.
Mexico’s President Calls for Calm
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, addressed the nation following confirmation of the cartel leader’s death. In a message posted on X, she urged citizens to remain calm and rely on official information channels.
She explained that federal forces had conducted the operation earlier in the day and acknowledged that it had led to blockades and other reactions in certain areas. However, she emphasised that coordination between federal and state governments remained strong.
According to the president, the country’s Security Cabinet has been providing ongoing updates through social media platforms. She noted that daily activities continue as usual across most of the national territory, despite the isolated incidents in Jalisco.
She also expressed appreciation for the efforts of Mexico’s armed forces, the National Guard and other security agencies involved in the operation.
Ongoing Precautions for Travellers
Canadian officials have advised citizens currently in Jalisco to follow instructions from local authorities, monitor reliable news sources and contact Canadian consular services if assistance is needed. Travellers planning visits to the region are encouraged to review the updated advisory before departure.
While popular destinations such as Puerto Vallarta remain major tourist hubs, the advisory highlights the importance of staying informed during periods of heightened security activity. Officials from both countries continue to monitor conditions closely as security forces work to prevent further disruptions.
