Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed profound sorrow on Wednesday, describing the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy for the country. The violence unfolded Tuesday afternoon at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, leaving families and residents reeling in disbelief.
Attack Unfolds at Secondary School
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, officers responded to reports of an active shooter at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time. When police arrived at the secondary school, six victims were found deceased inside the building. Another individual later died while being transported to hospital.
Authorities also discovered two additional bodies at a residence connected to the incident. The suspect, identified in an early emergency alert as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress, was found dead at the scene from what police described as a self-inflicted injury. Investigators confirmed there is no indication of further suspects or ongoing threats to public safety.
Federal Leaders Offer Support
In a statement posted on social media, Carney said he was deeply distressed by the events in Tumbler Ridge. He extended condolences to grieving families and thanked first responders for their bravery during the emergency response.
The prime minister said he had contacted British Columbia Premier David Eby and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to coordinate federal assistance. He assured residents that national officials are working closely with provincial authorities to provide support during the investigation and recovery process.
“Our country’s strength lies in its compassion and unity during moments of crisis,” Carney said, noting that communities across Canada are standing in solidarity with those affected.
Community in Shock
Tumbler Ridge, a remote town of about 2,400 residents located roughly 660 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, is struggling to come to terms with the scale of the loss. The secondary school serves approximately 160 students in grades 7 through 12.
During the incident, both the secondary school and the local elementary school were placed under a “hold and secure” order. Northern Lights College, which operates a campus within the secondary school, was also affected.
Authorities confirmed that the schools and college campus will remain closed for the rest of the week as officials focus on supporting families and continuing the investigation.
Medical Response and Ongoing Investigation
Health officials reported that two individuals with serious or life-threatening injuries were airlifted to larger medical facilities. At least 25 others were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening at the local health centre. Access to the facility was temporarily restricted to manage the influx of patients but was expected to return to normal operations the following day.
North District Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd of the RCMP said the situation developed rapidly and required close coordination between law enforcement, school staff and emergency responders. He praised the swift actions taken to secure the area and assist victims.
Investigators continue to examine multiple properties for any additional evidence or individuals who may require assistance. As of Wednesday, authorities had not released further details about the identities of the victims or the suspect. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
