President Donald Trump: Will the 50% tariffs imposed by Trump on India soon be lifted? Three US Lawmakers Introduce a House Resolution
President Donald Trump: On Friday (local time), three members of the US House of Representatives introduced a resolution to end President Donald Trump’s declaration of national emergency, which placed tariffs of up to 50% on imports from India. They called the actions “illegal” and detrimental to American consumers, workers, and bilateral relations.

Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi are leading the resolution, which comes after a bipartisan Senate vote to remove comparable levies on Brazil and limit the President’s use of emergency powers to increase import taxes.
The resolution, according to the release, aims to remove the additional 25% “secondary” duties that were placed on India on August 27, 2025, on top of previous reciprocal tariffs. Together, these tariffs increased duties on many products of Indian origin to 50% under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Congresswoman emphasized the involvement of Indian firms
“North Carolina’s economy is deeply connected to India through trade, investment, and a vibrant Indian American community,” Congresswoman Ross said, pointing out that North Carolina manufacturers export hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of goods to India each year, while Indian businesses have invested over a billion dollars in the state, creating thousands of jobs in industries like technology and life sciences.
“India is an important cultural, economic, and strategic partner, and these illegal tariffs are a tax on everyday North Texans who are already struggling with rising costs,” said Representative Veasey.
Tariffs had the opposite effect.
Congressman Krishnamoorthi, an Indian-American, said that the tariffs were “counterproductive, disrupt supply chains, harm American workers, and drive up costs for consumers,” emphasizing that their removal would improve security and economic ties between the US and India.
“These levies hurt American jobs, disrupt supply networks, and increase consumer prices rather than promoting American interests or security. The United States will be able to interact with India to further our common economic and security goals if these detrimental tariffs are lifted,” Krishnamoorthi said.
The resolution is a component of a larger effort by House Democrats to reestablish U.S. ties with India and oppose Trump’s unilateral trade policies. Together with Congressman Ro Khanna and 19 other members of Congress, Ross, Veasey, and Krishnamoorthi had pushed the president earlier in October to rescind his trade measures and mend frayed bilateral relations with India.
“Ending Trump’s India tariffs is part of a broader effort by congressional Democrats to reclaim Congress’ constitutional authority over trade and to stop the President from using emergency powers to unilaterally impose his misguided trade policies,” said the press release.
Citing India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, Trump put a 25% duty on Indian imports beginning August 1 and then increased it by another 25% a few days later, bringing the total to 50%. He claimed that this fueled Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine.
