KP Sharma: The Inquiry Commission has removed the travel restrictions for Oli, the chair of the CPN-UML

KP Sharma: A day after recording his testimony at his Gundu mansion in Bhaktapur, CPN-UML chair and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli’s mobility restrictions were released by the investigation committee looking into the events of September 8–9, 2025, according to The Kathmandu Post.

A commission team went to Oli’s home on Sunday to get his statement, according to The Kathmandu Post. Oli has earlier accused panel head Gauri Bahadur Karki of prejudice, questioned the body’s impartiality, and declined to visit its office. According to the commission, his comments needed to be documented in some way.

The probe panel’s Bigyan Raj Sharma said, “We took the decision after we received the written statement of the former prime minister.”

The commission issued a formal notification to Oli’s home on Sunday, and he immediately turned up his written statement. While the panel looked into the violent repression of young demonstrations, Oli, then-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and a number of other top officials were subject to mobility restrictions. The Kathmandu Post said that restrictions on other officials were quickly removed after the recording of their testimonies.

The Kathmandu Post reports that the three-person commission, headed by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, was established to look into claims of political mismanagement, excessive force, and human rights violations during the youth-led Gen Z uprising, which resulted in 77 fatalities, including 19 on the first day of protests.

On the same day, Oli also made an in-person appearance before the National Human Rights Commission to record his testimony. Oli allegedly denied having any personal involvement in giving the order for police to open fire on the first day of demonstrations during a more than two and a half-hour Q&A session. Oli contended that the Prime Minister does not provide commands to the police, according to a person with knowledge of the procedure, as reported by The Kathmandu Post.
