Kentucky University Shooting: One person is killed in a deadly shooting at Kentucky State University; a suspect is taken into custody
Kentucky University Shooting: A suspect who is not a student at Kentucky State University was taken into custody after a shooting at a residence hall on Tuesday left at least one student dead and another badly injured, according to authorities.

Scott Tracy, Frankfort’s assistant chief of police, said during a press conference on Tuesday night that the suspect in the shooting, which occurred at about 3 p.m., is not a Kentucky State student. Police arrived to the gunshot quickly, according to Tracy.
“Frankfort police believe this to be an isolated incident and there are no active safety concerns on campus at this time,” he said.
At the institution in Frankfort, the state capital, footage from Louisville’s WLKY-TV showed several police cars outside a group of dorms and crime scene tape in a courtyard.
One student was killed.
According to the university, one student who was shot in Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall, the resident hall, is in critical but stable condition. The pupils’ identities will not be made public by the school right away.
The school stated in a statement that “we are in close contact with the families and are providing every available support to them,” and that support services, including counseling, are available.
In a video statement shared on X, Governor Andy Beshear said that “there is no ongoing threat” and that the shooting “appears to be an isolated incident.”
“Our nation and commonwealth are not places for violence. Please join us in prayer for our KSU students and the impacted families. He said, “Let’s hope for a world in which terrible atrocities don’t occur.
Final examinations and classes are canceled.
The institution has announced the cancellation of classes, final examinations, and campus events for the remainder of the week. The school website said that Friday was the last day of the autumn semester.
According to a statement from the school, “Students may return home if they choose,” “Additional guidance will be communicated as soon as possible.”
Koffi C. Akakpo, president of the university, described it as a “senseless tragedy.” He said, “We’re mourning the loss of one of our students,” during the press conference on Tuesday night. “As a parent I cannot imagine receiving the call I placed today to the parents.”
In the same part of the institution, there had been two shootings in four months.
On August 17, two persons who the university said were not students were hit by several bullets fired from a car close to the same residential hall. According to Frankfort police, one victim received minimal medical attention while the other suffered more significant injuries. Gunfire damaged at least one car and the hostel.
With over 2,200 students, Kentucky State is a public historically black institution. In 1886, lawmakers approved the establishment of the school. The distance between the school and the Capitol building is around 3.2 kilometers to the east.
