Since late December, protests over the steep decline in the rial and the ongoing economic hardship have broken out in a number of Iranian cities. Iranian officials have warned against violence and vandalism while acknowledging the protests and expressing a desire to resolve economic problems.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called on Iranians to maintain unity in a televised speech on Friday, claiming that some demonstrators are trying to appease the US.

Police and what the government called “rioters” have reportedly engaged in deadly altercations during the continuing demonstrations. The official death toll is yet unknown.

According to official broadcaster IRIB, the Iranian military on Saturday asked Iranians to band together to “thwart the enemy’s plots,” pledging to preserve public property and key infrastructure in the face of ongoing protests.

Israel and “hostile terrorist organizations” were charged by the military in a statement with “attempting to undermine order and peace in cities and disrupt public security through another conspiracy,” as well as “trying to incite another rebellion in the name of supporting the Iranian people.” It urged people to be on guard and band together in order to “defeat the enemy’s plots,” claiming that Iran is “in the middle of a war.”

According to the statement, the army and other military forces “under the command” of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will keep an eye on enemy moves and steadfastly defend national interests while safeguarding public property and key infrastructure.
