FBI – Reward Increased to $1 Million in 2015 Maryland Murder Case
FBI- The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has significantly increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of Bhadresh Kumar Chetanbhai Patel, an Indian national accused of murdering his wife in Maryland in 2015. The reward has now been raised to as much as 1 million US dollars, reflecting renewed efforts by authorities to locate the suspect, who has remained missing for more than a decade.

Longstanding Fugitive on FBI Most Wanted List
Patel, now 35 years old, has been listed among the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives for several years. Investigators say he has evaded arrest since April 2015, when he allegedly fled after killing his wife at their workplace in the United States. The federal agency believes the increased reward may encourage individuals with crucial information to come forward.
Authorities confirmed that Patel was last believed to be in the Newark area of New Jersey shortly after the incident. Since then, there have been no confirmed sightings, making the case one of the more prolonged fugitive investigations handled by the agency.
Details of the Alleged Murder
According to investigators, the crime took place late on the night of April 12, 2015, at a doughnut shop in Hanover, Maryland, where Patel and his wife were working. Officials allege that Patel attacked his 21-year-old wife, Palak Patel, in a storage room located at the back of the store. She reportedly suffered multiple blows from an object during the assault.
Law enforcement agencies believe the attack occurred just before midnight while the couple were alone inside the shop. Emergency responders later discovered the victim, prompting a homicide investigation that quickly focused on her husband.
Arrest Warrants and Federal Charges
A day after the killing, authorities in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, issued a local arrest warrant charging Patel with several serious offenses. These included first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and using a dangerous weapon with the intention to cause harm.
Within a week, federal prosecutors also stepped in. On April 20, 2015, the United States District Court in Baltimore issued a federal warrant accusing Patel of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. This charge is commonly used when a suspect crosses state lines or attempts to evade law enforcement after committing a crime.
Timeline of Patel’s Escape
Investigators believe Patel left the scene through a rear exit of the shop immediately after the attack. Authorities say he later returned to the apartment he shared with his wife, where he collected personal belongings and cash before leaving the area.
Records suggest that Patel then took a taxi to a hotel located near Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Surveillance footage reportedly showed him checking into the hotel around 3 a.m. without any luggage. He stayed only a few hours and checked out at approximately 10 a.m.
From there, he boarded a hotel shuttle heading to Newark Penn Station. Officials say that moment represents the last confirmed sighting of Patel.
Possible Motive and International Links
Investigators have suggested that the couple had been facing immigration-related challenges. Their visas had reportedly expired shortly before the incident, and Palak Patel was believed to be considering returning to India. Authorities suspect her husband disagreed with that plan, though the exact motive remains under investigation.
Law enforcement agencies have not ruled out the possibility that Patel may have received assistance from acquaintances or relatives. Officials say he has known connections in several US states, including New Jersey, Kentucky, Georgia, and Illinois, in addition to ties in India.
Investigators have also considered the possibility that Patel may have crossed into Canada before leaving North America.
Gradual Increase in Reward
The FBI initially announced a reward of 100,000 US dollars for information that could help locate Patel. As years passed without a breakthrough, the reward was raised to 250,000 dollars.
The latest decision to increase the amount to 1 million dollars signals a renewed push to solve the case and bring the suspect into custody. Authorities are urging anyone with credible information to contact law enforcement agencies immediately.
