Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, confirmed that he received a visit from Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The meeting took place at the Jamaat leader’s residence in the Bashundhara residential area of the capital on Sunday evening.

The visit followed the BNP’s sweeping victory in the 300-seat parliament, where the party and its allies secured 212 seats, comfortably surpassing the 151-seat threshold required to form a government. Jamaat-e-Islami, contesting separately this time, won 77 seats and emerged as the second-largest bloc in parliament. The Bangladesh Awami League did not participate in the election.

According to reports published by Prothom Alo, the meeting began at around 7:10 pm and was described as primarily a courtesy call. Leaders from both sides exchanged greetings and also addressed current national concerns.

Commitment to Address Post-Election Incidents

In a statement shared on social media, Shafiqur Rahman said Tarique Rahman had assured him that measures were being taken to address incidents of violence reported after the announcement of results. These incidents reportedly included attacks affecting opposition supporters and members of minority communities.

Rahman stated that Jamaat-e-Islami welcomed the assurance and emphasized that every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation, should feel safe and protected under the law. He reiterated that democratic governance must ensure accountability and security for all communities.

The Jamaat leader also outlined his party’s broader vision, calling for a state built on justice, constitutional governance and democratic values. He noted that while his party would cooperate with the incoming government on issues of national importance, it would also perform its responsibilities as a principled opposition in parliament.

Role of the Opposition in the New Parliament

Shafiqur Rahman indicated that his party’s approach would be constructive rather than confrontational. He stressed that when government policies align with public interest, Jamaat would extend support. However, he added that the opposition would not hesitate to raise concerns where accountability is required.

The formation of the new government is currently underway, with Tarique Rahman widely regarded as the prime minister-designate following the BNP’s commanding majority. The evolving political arrangement marks a significant shift, as Jamaat-e-Islami, previously allied with the BNP, now assumes the role of a major opposition force.

Allegations of Violence in Panchagarh

While national leaders exchanged assurances in Dhaka, reports of unrest surfaced from several districts. In Panchagarh, allegations of post-election violence drew attention after claims were made that homes and businesses linked to certain political activists had been attacked.

Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of the National Citizen Party for the northern region, alleged that more than 30 residences and commercial establishments associated with party members were targeted following the declaration of results. These claims were also reported by Prothom Alo.

A defeated candidate from an 11-party alliance in the Panchagarh-1 constituency further accused BNP leaders and activists of involvement in the incidents. The BNP has not publicly responded to these specific allegations.

In Tetulia upazila, an EasyBike driver named Swapan Rana claimed he was assaulted after the election due to his political activities and his daughter’s involvement with a women’s wing of the National Citizen Party. Authorities have not yet issued a comprehensive statement regarding these individual cases.

Focus on Stability and Governance

As Bangladesh prepares for a new parliamentary term, attention remains focused on ensuring political stability and upholding democratic institutions. The assurances given during Sunday’s meeting reflect a broader expectation that the incoming administration will address allegations of violence and ensure the protection of citizens’ rights.

With government formation underway and opposition roles clearly defined, the coming weeks are likely to test how effectively political leaders translate public commitments into concrete action.
