Diplomacy – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to land in Mumbai at 3:15 pm on Friday, beginning his first official visit to India since taking office.
The trip, confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office in Ottawa, marks a significant step in efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic engagement between the two nations. Carney departed for India earlier this week, initiating a high-level state visit scheduled from February 27 to March 2 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mumbai Meetings Set the Economic Tone
Carney’s visit opens in Mumbai, where he will spend two days meeting a broad cross-section of business and institutional leaders. His engagements include discussions with chief executives, financial sector representatives, innovators, education leaders, and officials connected to Canadian pension funds operating in India.
These interactions are expected to focus on expanding trade and investment flows, fostering collaboration in financial services, and identifying new opportunities in emerging sectors. By beginning the trip in India’s financial capital, Ottawa is signaling that economic cooperation will be central to the broader diplomatic agenda.
Officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have described the visit as an opportunity to explore fresh avenues of partnership while consolidating existing cooperation frameworks.
High-Level Talks in New Delhi
On March 1, Carney will travel to New Delhi for formal discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Delegation-level talks are scheduled for March 2 at Hyderabad House, a key venue for official state engagements.
The meeting follows earlier interactions between the two leaders in Kananaskis in June 2025 and Johannesburg in November 2025. The upcoming dialogue will serve as a structured review of progress under the India-Canada Strategic Partnership.
According to the MEA, discussions are expected to cover a wide spectrum of sectors, including trade and investment, energy security, critical minerals supply chains, agriculture, education partnerships, and research collaboration. Regional and global developments will also be on the agenda, reflecting the growing importance of coordination on broader geopolitical issues.
Both leaders are also set to participate in the India-Canada CEOs Forum, aimed at aligning policy initiatives with private sector priorities and strengthening business-to-business ties.
Rebuilding Ties After Diplomatic Strain
Carney’s visit comes at a delicate yet promising moment in bilateral relations. Diplomatic ties had deteriorated sharply following the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and subsequent allegations by the government of then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding possible Indian involvement. New Delhi strongly rejected those claims, and the episode led to mutual expulsions of diplomats and an extended diplomatic impasse.
In recent months, however, officials in Ottawa have indicated a shift in approach. Ahead of the visit, senior Canadian representatives suggested that the government no longer views India as being linked to violent criminal activities within Canada. One official noted that the trip itself reflects confidence that previous concerns are no longer driving the relationship.
This recalibration signals a more pragmatic foreign policy stance, aimed at restoring working-level cooperation while addressing security issues through dialogue.
Security Cooperation and Future Outlook
Security coordination has emerged as a key pillar in rebuilding trust. India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, recently highlighted extensive exchanges between national security officials from both countries. Notably, discussions during National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to Canada are reported to have helped establish a clearer roadmap for cooperation.
The two sides have developed a framework to tackle transnational organised crime, violent extremism, and cyber threats, reflecting shared concerns in an increasingly interconnected security environment.
Officials on both sides emphasise that the visit represents more than a symbolic reset. It is intended to lay the groundwork for sustained engagement rooted in mutual respect, economic complementarity, and ongoing security collaboration.
As Carney’s first official trip to India unfolds, both governments appear focused on turning a difficult chapter into an opportunity for renewed partnership, with an emphasis on practical cooperation and long-term stability in India-Canada relations.
