According to the Xinhua news agency, police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said Monday morning that 16 individuals had been officially declared dead after the shooting.

According to a police statement, two persons passed away in the hospital and fourteen others died at the site.

One of the assailants is among the dead, whose ages vary from 10 to 87.

As of Monday morning, an additional forty patients, five of whom were in severe condition, were receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

A 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son were the two suspected shooters, according to NSW Police Force Commissioner Mal Lanyon, who made this announcement at a news conference on Monday morning.

According to Lanyon, the 50-year-old, who was slain at the scene, had six lawfully owned firearms and was a licensed weapon holder.

The two guys opened fire on a group of at least 1,000 people who had gathered at the beach for an event commemorating the first day of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah at about 6:47 p.m. local time on Sunday.

Lanyon, who formally designated the shooting as a terrorist incident on Sunday night, said on Monday that inquiries into the assault’s motivations are still underway.

In a post on X, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared that hatred and violence will not split the country. We’ll face it head-on. And we shall unite in support of one another and Jewish Australians.”

Prior to this, the prime minister said that the assault was an act of “pure evil” and that Australia will take all necessary steps to eradicate antisemitism.

“It is a scourge and we’ll eradicate it together,” he said.

It is the worst mass shooting in Australia since the 1996 massacre of 35 people at Port Arthur on the island state of Tasmania, which led to significant reforms in the country’s gun control legislation.
