AIHub – South Korea PM Kim Min-seok Begins US Visit to Promote UN Initiative

AIHub – South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok is scheduled to begin a week-long overseas visit on Thursday, with stops in the United States and Switzerland aimed at strengthening diplomatic engagement and promoting Seoul’s proposal to establish a United Nations artificial intelligence hub.

South korea pm us visit

The trip comes at a time when South Korea is actively seeking international backing for the initiative, which is designed to create a platform that connects UN organizations with both government institutions and private technology sectors to develop artificial intelligence solutions addressing global challenges.

Government officials said the visit will include several high-level meetings with international leaders and representatives of global organizations.

Government Push for Proposed UN AI Hub

At the center of the prime minister’s visit is South Korea’s proposal to host a facility tentatively called the UN AI hub. The project is envisioned as a collaborative space where United Nations agencies, research institutions, and technology companies can work together on artificial intelligence projects focused on public policy and global development.

South Korean officials believe the initiative could strengthen international cooperation on technology governance while positioning the country as a leading participant in global AI research and innovation.

Kim was recently appointed chair of the government’s committee responsible for coordinating the bid to host the hub. The committee is tasked with promoting the proposal internationally and engaging with UN institutions to outline how the project would operate.

Possible Meeting With US Vice President

During his visit to Washington, Kim is expected to meet with senior members of the US administration. Officials familiar with the trip indicated that discussions are being arranged with US Vice President JD Vance, although final details of the meeting were still being confirmed.

If the meeting takes place, it is likely to include discussions on economic cooperation, trade policies, and broader bilateral relations between the two countries.

One of the major topics expected to come up is a legislative measure in South Korea that supports the country’s plan to invest around 350 billion US dollars in the United States. The bill, known as the Special Act on Strategic Investment Management between South Korea and the United States, is scheduled for approval in the National Assembly with bipartisan support.

South Korean officials see the legislation as an important framework to guide large-scale investments and deepen economic cooperation with Washington.

Diplomatic Engagement at the United Nations

Following his meetings in Washington, Kim will travel to New York to continue discussions with international organizations based at the United Nations headquarters.

The prime minister plans to meet with senior leaders from several UN agencies, including the United Nations Secretariat, UNICEF, and the United Nations Development Programme.

He is also expected to hold talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding South Korea’s proposal for the artificial intelligence hub and the potential role of UN institutions in the initiative.

Officials say these meetings will focus on how the proposed platform could support cooperation between international organizations and technology sectors in addressing issues such as climate change, healthcare, and economic development.

Consultations With Global Institutions in Geneva

The final leg of Kim’s trip will take him to Geneva, Switzerland, where many major international organizations maintain offices.

During his visit there, he is expected to meet representatives from the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and the International Organization for Migration.

According to officials, the discussions will again highlight the proposed AI hub and explore ways global institutions could collaborate on projects that rely on emerging technologies to address international policy challenges.

South Korea has increasingly emphasized digital technology and artificial intelligence as key areas of international cooperation, and the government hopes the initiative will attract broad participation from global organizations and research partners.
